The Clayton military gift history begins with the Clifton brothers, who founded the Clifton Machine Shop in 1881. The company became nationally known for manufacturing artillery and machine guns. In 1916, the brothers sold their business to George W. Kluger, Sr. Kluger was a Major General in the United States Army during World War I and served as Commanding Officer of the Third Brigade of the Seventeenth Infantry Division. He was responsible for manufacturing over 1 million rifles, shotguns, grenades, tanks and other equipment for troops on all sides of the war. In 1933, Cleveland businessman Art Kapp bought out Kluger's share in the company and changed its name to M-G-M Corporation. Under Kapp's leadership, M-G-M produced a wide variety of weaponry including automatic pistols (1938), grenade launchers (1939), tanks (1940), planes (1941) and missiles (1945). The company remained headquartered in Cleveland until 2003 when it merged with Brownells Incorporated to form Brownells/MGM Firearms Incorporated. During World War II, M-G-M exported arms to more than 30 countries including Japan, China and South Korea. The company also manufactured munitions used by American forces in Europe and Pacific Theater of Operations such as napalm and atomic bombs. In 1945, after winning an election landslide against incumbent Franklin D Roosevelt, President Harry Truman ordered M-G-M to cease production of firearms and convert them into consumer appliances such as radios or televisions. However, during postwar years M-G-M resumed production of firearms under new corporate names including Brownells/MTI Corporation before being acquired by Sturm Ruger AG in 1998. Clayton is a small town in Union County, Ohio, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. The town was founded in 1811 and incorporated in 1821. Clayton is located on the banks of the Scioto River. It is named after General John Clayton, an American Revolutionary War general and one of the original trustees of the University of Michigan. The first settler in what would become Clayton was Nicholas Browning, who arrived in 1792 as part of a group led by Col. George Rogers Clark. In 1800, Captain David Dennison settled seven miles (11 km) to the east on land that would become part of Clay Township and he erected a cabin there on November 3, 1800. A resident of this early township called it "Dennisonville". Captain Dennison's cabin still stands today just north of downtown Clayton along State Route 34 near mile marker 207-209. In 1811, Jethro Gibbs moved from Huntingdon Township to take up land grant number 12 under the auspices of President James Kapp during what became known as Territorial days for Ohioans living beyond Jackson County line – henceforth known as "Ohio Land Grant Program". He bought two hundred acres (80 ha) south and east of present day Claytown along with 500 acres (240 ha), or almost half all present-day Clayton township – from William Hargrave at an auction held February 13th —containing $5 per acre ($101 total). Mr. Gibbs set out to build himself a log home which he named "Gibbs' Mill" after himself and his father also named their farm Robert Gibbs after Colonel George Rogers Clark's father (). On October 7th 1871 citizens met at old stage depot northwest corner High Street/US 21 & SR 34 where they decided upon formulating a plan for organization within their new township Their first meeting followed three days later on October 11th1871 when they elected Capt[y] Rufus Sibley President pro tempore [sic]. Thereafter six settlers were appointed commissioners that resulted in creating Highway No.[14] luring businesses away like Wm Hargrave's store closed down about 1830 because no other route served better or offered more convenience for goods transported than US 21 running parallel thru [then] northeast cornerHigh St./SR 34 westerly direction now northerly side road heading towards modern day Pittsburgh
