Centerville, Ohio is a small town in the U.S. state of Ohio located on the Scioto River between Youngstown and Warren County. The population was 2,826 at the 2010 census. Centerville is part of the Lima-Canton, OH-KY Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in Centerville was Samuel French in 1814. The town was platted in 1824 by John Williams and named for Colonel Cornelius Vanderbilt's estate near Kingston, Ontario, Canada (now Niagara Falls). In 1837, Centerville had a population of 350; it grew to 1,000 by 1850. By 1870, Centerville had a population of 3,500 and became an important transportation center for the area because it connected Youngstown with Cleveland and Toledo through canalboats and steamboats until railroads came along in the late 19th century. In 1902, General Electric began production at their factory east of Centerville on what is now Keystone Road (which has since been renamed Edison Highway). This led to development around that site including modern buildings on what are now Erie Boulevard (formerly US 20), Valley View Drive (formerly State Route 62) and West Main Street (now SR 602). Centerville's economy started to decline during World War II due to military production around that site but rebounded after the war as manufacturing moved away from those facilities into other parts of Ohio and Indiana. However, economic prosperity slowed down again during the 2000s as technological advancements changed how many jobs were requiring requires than manual labor which contributed to offshoring of some jobs away from Centerville throughout that time period. However, recent efforts by local officials have seen some resurgence with new businesses being founded downtown such as Cafe Nero Italiano & Brewery which opened up in 2017 and replaced an old gas station next door which closed down in 2016; this has helped lead to increased retail sales around town which have helped keep pace with overall growth rates within the community over recent years. Centerville is a town in the Delaware County, Ohio, United States. The population was 2,856 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Akron–Muncie–Dayton Metropolitan Statistical Area. Centerville was founded in 1811 by Captain James Wirt and his wife Hannah Armstrong as a small log settlement on the Scioto River. The first post office was established in 1814. It grew to become one of the largest towns in Delaware County with a population of over 10,000 in 1930. The town charter was granted on December 12, 1831 and it became an incorporated village on November 3, 1892. On January 1, 1909 Centerville adopted a new municipal charter which provided for an elected mayor and township trustees; however this system did not last and ceased to exist after Borough President John Daughtry resigned due to health concerns. Centerville has been home to several professional sports teams since its incorporation as a village: The Ajax Indians (1909-present), Dayton Dragons (1917-present), Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins (1941-1945) and Mansfield Falcons (1994-1996). Many notable people have resided or worked here including George Washington Carver Sr., Ulysses S Grant Wood Jr., Henny Youngman, Indiana Jones, Marvin Gaye and Bob Dylan among others The centennial of Centerville's incorporation as an unincorporated community occurred on December 12th, 2008 with festivities being held throughout the week at various locations including Centerville High School where food samples were served from local farm stalls during lunchtime!
Centerville was founded in 1796 by General Anthony Wayne and his wife, Deborah. The town was named for the small stream that ran through it. Centerville had a population of about 125 people when it first started to be developed. It grew quickly, and by 1800, Centerville had a population of over 500 people. In 1815, the United States Congress created the township of Centerville out of part of what was then Fairfield Township. The township eventually became a city in 1902.
