Barberton is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio and the county seat of Clark County. The population was 10,827 at the 2010 census, making it the seventh-largest city in Clark County. It is located on the southern edge of Hamilton County, just east of Cincinnati and west of Dayton. The area that now Barberton was first settled by families from Maryland in 1796 as part of what would become Hamilton Township. The town was named for George Washington Barber, who had moved to the area from Newtown, Pennsylvania in 1795. In 1810, a post office called "Barnesville" was established in what is now Barberton, and remained operational until 1903. In 1825, General John Custer led his army through central Ohio during his famed march across America and battle with Native American forces near present-day Uniontown; as a result of this event, much attention was focused on south central Ohio which included Barberton. A store opened up in what is now downtown Barberton soon after Custer's arrival and started to grow trade with surrounding towns such as Springfield and Powelltown along with goods brought overland by traders from Kentucky and Indiana via Perrysburg (now Dayton). It wasn't until 1840 when construction began on what would eventually become downtown Barberton; at that time it consisted only of a single room used for storage by local merchants. growth continued throughout the 19th century with businesses opening up around downtown including millsinery stores such as Hennepin Bros., harness shops like Wm Ecker & Sons Inc., gristmills operated by Prentice Manufacturing Company etc., while also new housing being built along Delaware Avenue between First Street and Third Street which served as both commercial District 3 offices for various businesses including law firms then gradually became residential areas becoming known simply as "Downtown". In 1895 when an express train depot/terminal station was constructed adjacent to Delaware Avenue between First Street/Third Street it helped spur further development especially around Second Avenue forming what are today known Downtown business districts such as Federal Plaza (later renamed Park Square), Erie Market Place( later renamed Gateway Center) etc.; while also contributing significantly to increased traffic levels within Downtown resulting in more parking surfaces available nearby unlike today where most blocks have only one space per block limiting street access televised entertainment options being available instead oftenTimes squares found throughout major cities

However, by 2000, the economic decline of Ohio had begun to take hold and Barberton's population sank below 4,000 people for the first time in its history.
