Ashland is a small town in southern Ohio, located about 20 miles east of Cincinnati. The population was 7,569 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Ashland-Middletown-Beachwood Local School District. The first settlers in what is now Ashland were German immigrants who arrived there in 1814. They named their town after the ash tree that grows near their farmstead. The first school was built in 1827 and it remained in use until 1951 when it was closed due to budget cuts. In 1837, John Covington donated land to build a courthouse and jail on the site of present day First Baptist Church. The cornerstone for the building was laid on July 16, 1837 by Chief Justice James Buchanan Sr.. In 1865, Ohio became part of the United States and Ashland became an incorporated village with its own government and social system. On November 1, 1909, Ashland voters passed a referendum asking for annexation by Cincinnati because of its location within walking distance of both cities' downtowns. This request was accepted and since then, Ashland has been an integral part of Cincinnati's community life The city annexed additional areas including parts of Middletown (1923), Beacheside (1936), Donelson Heights (1963), Normandy Heights (1973) and Southgate Heights (1997). Today all but one municipality - Beachwood - are inside the city limits while Southgate Heights remains unincorporated within Cincinnati proper

Ashland, Ohio is a town in Ashland County, Ohio, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1812 by James W. Ash and his wife Nancy Gentry as a small village on the Scioto River. The town grew rapidly during the 1830s and 1840s due to its strategic location as an important transportation hub on the Great Lakes region and its access to timber and other resources. In 1850, the Ashlanders voted to secede from Ohio and form their own state, which they did in 1859. By 1870, much of what is now Ashland had been developed into a large city with over 100 businesses. The city's growth continued through the 20th century until it became an important center for manufacturing during the 21st century. The city of Cleveland annexed part of Ashland in 1907; however, most of its economic activity remained within Ashland until 1970 when Cleveland withdrew all municipal services from the community effective January 1, 1971. The last business in downtown #1 closed on December 31st 1978 after more than 60 years of operation Ashland's economy has always been based around manufacturing: first aluminum cans (1931), then shoe boxes (1948), cigarettes (1957), radios (1958), typewriters (1960-1965) In 1997-1998 there was a $10 million project called "Forgotten Founders" which restored many buildings from ashland history including two stores that were destroyed by fire: One was located at 9th Street & 2nd Avenue S., while another store at 5th Street & 3rd Avenue N., also known as "The Old Grease Shop".
