By 1700, most of what is now Amherst had been developed as a township under the jurisdiction of Athens Township (now Muskegon Heights), one mile to the east and south-east of present-day Amherst. In 1802, an act was passed by the General Assembly providing for a new county seat for Medina County; this later became Athens Junction (later known as Amherst). In 1836, when Lawrence County was established, Athens Junction became Lawrenceburg; however, this name change did not take effect until 1840 because Washington Township had already been renamed Athens in that year's reorganization following its creation from part of Medina County and added to Lawrence County proper. When Union College founded its campus on prominent land near downtown Athens in 1868, it purchased all but 1/3rdsection (northwest corner) of lot number 4 which formed today's northeast corner lot block on Third Street between Broadway and Park Row streets from trustees Hiram Hinton Peck and George Saunders Knight including three buildings on First Street between Broadway and Park Row streets: Mr James Trotter's brick building (now occupied by Bicknell University), Mrs Jane Goodall's two-story frame dwelling (now occupied by Pohlman Development Company), trustee Jno Thornton's two-story frame house (or " houses" - moved from their original location within city limits after incorporation) In 1870s rapid growth took place due to increasing industrial activity along with easy access to railroads: during this time much development occurred along Third Street finally becoming home to many businesses such as Sears & Roebuck department stores then Macy’s before eventually becoming predominantly residential with few remaining commercial buildings while Third Street remained largely commercial up until 1974 when it changed hands again with property line changes resulting in many residences moving out into surrounding neighborhoods There have also been several large office developments over time including One Financial Plaza housing headquarters for Lehman Brothers Inc., Ford Motor Company’s old Willowbrook Plant site across Woodward Avenue from OSHA Headquartersformerly home also to AIG who leased space therefrom through 2006 prior to bankruptcy but since reopening as Invesco Center multiple other companies have rented space therefrom such as Mastercard Services USA Inc., Wells Fargo & Co., Xerox Palo Alto Research Laboratories etc . While many properties still remain primarily residential they are increasingly being used for professional or light commercial purposes . Most recently some residents have tried turning their homes into apartments although these typically do not come with attached garages or street parking

In 1824-25 George Washington Carver spent time farming in Amherst and penned his famous slogan "Fruitless labor does not make fertile soil." After he move to CincinnatiCVille he published "Agrarianism – Its Moral Philosophy" which helped spread knowledge about agriculture around America during this time period
