Amherst, Ohio is a small town in the U.S. state of Ohio, located on the border of Butler and Trumbull counties. The population was 7,869 at the 2010 census. Amherst is part of the Cleveland-Akron-Canton, OH metropolitan area and is the most populous municipality in that area with over 12,000 residents according to 2016 estimates. The village of Amherst was platted in 1827 by John Amherst and Isaac Hilliard as part of a survey around which much of what is now Trumbull County was laid out (the first township being formed December 29th, 1828). The original village site lay near where Grafton Street crosses Union Street today. Amherst has been home to many famous people throughout its history including: General George Washington; Henry Clay Frick; Andrew Johnson; James Baldwin; CEO Tim Cook from Apple Inc.; author Shirley Jackson; and Nobel laureate Dr. Albert Einstein. In 1830, Amherst became part of the new United States when it merged with four other villages – Belmont, DeKalb Heights, East Liverpool and Richfield – making up Warren County (later Butler County). In 1837 US Congressman Elijah Holmes moved to Amherst from Cincinnati after winning an election there that year on a platform opposing slavery while living within easy reach of freedom fighters across the river in Freedom Hall on Fifth Avenue (now Irvington Avenue).
