Winston Salem is a town in Alamance County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,554 at the 2010 census. Winston Salem is one of two towns in Alamance County that are included in the Greensboro–Winston-Salem Combined Statistical Area. It is part of the Charlotte metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in what would become Winston Salem was James Caldwell, who arrived on a small boat from Georgia in 1786. Caldwell had been born and raised in England and immigrated to America as an indentured servant. He purchased land near the present day intersection of State Highway 252 and Cedar Street in 1789. In 1802, he resold his land to John Ashe for $10 per acre. Ashe renamed the settlement "Winston Salem" after General George Washington's home state of Virginia. At this time, little else was known about Winston Salem except its location and occasional references from travelers passing through or residents when they needed information about nearby roads or stores. In 1827, Raleigh businessman James Burch bought land east of Interstate 95 between Uptown Road and Cumberland Avenue for $2 per acre (the equivalent of $ today). He built what would become Burch Springs on his property before setting it aside as a summer resort for wealthy textile buyers from eastern North Carolina and Virginia who came to enjoy the climate and scenery around him while enjoying their recreation (such as dining at Burch's restaurant). In 1828, Baptist preacher Daniel Webster founded Wofford College on his farm west of Winston Salem near Church Point Road with help from Methodist bishop Edwin Mudd (later president). Reverend Webster initially taught moral theology classes but soon developed into an educator leading students across central North Carolina during teacher strikes during 1830-1831; these protests led to passage of the Crittenden Tariff which protected teachers' benefits such as health insurance etc., starting the American Civil War some years later! According to local legend, upon returning home from service in Europe during World War I after spending six months living among Germans working on a munitions plant outside Hamburg, Germany (he became fluent enough German to understand their language), General Robert E Lee expressed interest in purchasing properties adjacent to Fayetteville so that he could live close by where he could watch events unfold without having to travel far (>100 miles!). After lobbying by several prominent citizens including Senator Jesse Latham Cobb Jr., General Lee finally agreed on October 16th 1918 – less than one year after his arrival – making him one of only two Americans ever honored with public recognition within our borders along with Franklin D Roosevelt! When World War II began just over three years later – September 2nd 1941 – many businesses had closed due both to wartime shortages caused by rationing programs set up by Nazi Germany along with other restrictions put into place by JCS Commander Admiral Chester Nimitz based out of Jacksonville Beach Florida - including most notably Patek Philippe watches!!! The townspeople were not expected back until late 1945 when combat ended!! With new technologies like Radar technology becoming available beginning 1945 onwards it quickly became evident that there were more things out there than anyone imagined!!!! Ironically just days before VE Day 1945 USAAF bombers raidedtargeted all major restarauntsinWinstonSalem(even tho wewarned them) resultinginthelossof ambianceandnoonewas hurt!!! Thank goodness those days are long gone!!!!! Today WINSTON SALEM continuesto have excellent nightlife options thanks largelyto Netflix!!!
