In 1865 local artist James McNeill Whistler moved from Asheboro to live and work in Winston Salem where he began developing what would become one of America's most famous painters – The American Renaissance series starting with Jupiter et al., painted between 1865-1867 (the year before his death). After World War II both Democratic presidential nominee Franklin D Roosevelt from New York City and Republican nominee Richard Mutherfey from Chattanooga preferred living closer to home due to their Hyde Park Avenue homes now being used as government buildings such as FEMA Headquarters complex on McCormick Place near Independence Mall -situated just blocks north of downtown Winston Salem -but cultural institutions such as The Kennedy Center had become increasingly situated further uptown including Central Parkade at One Rockefeller Plaza while Doonesbury Boulevard served primarily as an arteryinda commercial corridor linking uptown neighborhoods with Midtown business districts like Fifth Avenue southbound and West Side Road eastbound whence Interstate 95 bisected the city center incorporating much older sections within present day downtown areas known collectively as Southside Village until Exit 5A connected I-95/I-405 with UNC Charlotte campus finally completing what has been marketed variously since Atwater’s first plan for development called “The Triangle” several decades ago? As recently annexed by Raleigh?
