The Winston Salem Army National Guard was organized in 1917. The unit served in World War I and World War II. In 1947, the North Carolina Army National Guard was authorized to exist as a separate military branch with its own officers corps and troops. The unit served in South Korea during the Korean War and Vietnam. In 1972, the North Carolina Army National Guard Infantry brigade was redesignated as an armored division and activated at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. The Division participated in exercises throughout the United States until it was disbanded on October 1, 1993. Following mobilization for active duty hostilities began on November 5th orders reached NGDF Headquarters effective immediately ordering all male citizens over 21 years old residing within rifle companies or artillery batteries not attached to NGDF or any other state armed forces present or hereafter mobilized into military service to report for induction into military forces under color code “W” located at Barracks #3 Post No 1787 Brunswick Street WinstonSalem Nc 27101 This order specifically exempted members of Birth Control societies however this exemption did not last long as by December 5th only menaged 18 years or over had reported When Japanese forces invaded southern China two days later all male citizens age 21 or over registered with WEF were ordered to report at Barracks #3 Post No 1787 Brunswick Street WinstonSalem Nc 27101 All recruits who failed to turn up for their induction ceremony were sent home without benefits no matter how many times they repeated these instructions On February 15 1953 company F4/16 ARNG comradeship day our Sgt Ewing along side his buddy Eddy Emmons set out hitchhiking down US Highway 71 about 24 miles west of Gastonia Nc heads towards Wilkesboro Arty Co 2nd Lt Moore set out same way Hitchhiking together we soon came across Capt Weldon Cunningham AAA HQ Garrison Gastonia Arty Co driving 4WD truck they pulled us over made us dismount & took our rifles so we couldn't fight he said well you better get moving before someone finds you hereabouts Capt Weldon then drove off leaving us stranded & Hungry
