Weddington is a town in Buncombe County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,731 at the 2010 census. Weddington has a post office with ZIP code 27604. Weddington was platted in 1819 by Captain George Washington and his family as part of the Newbern Purchase. The name comes from wedder (a tree) andmington (a small stream). The first settler in what is now Weddington was James Patey who arrived in 1798. In 1827, Colonel John Cranch founded a gristmill on the present-day site of the courthouse which still stands. In 1865, when Confederate General Robert Ewell led his army through Buncombe County to cross into North Carolina at Morehead City, he stopped at Weddington for water supplies before continuing on to Roanoke Island. The residents of Weddington came out to welcome him and escorted him back into town as he passed through on his way north. The Griggs Mill Company was founded here by Alexander Griggs in 1875 and became one of the leading grain mills in America during the late 19th century; it produced flour for many local restaurants and homes until it closed its doors in 1977. A new mill complex was built here beginning construction in 1984; it included an expressway connecting Interstate 95 to Asheville, new housing developments nearby including Wedgewood Estates and Riverbend Village, and increased production capacity for both flour and feed products from what had been one of Buncombe County's largest employers until that time—the Friars Pizza chain. A fire destroyed much of this complex on October 5, 1988; afterward most operations were transferred to another mill complex adjacent to Riverbend Village which reopened two years later with significantly more space but no change in product output because the company specialized only in pizza doughnuts instead of traditional flour fed products like breads or pasta sauces etc.—a situation that continued until 2001 when Sunoco acquired Friars Pizza and changed their corporate focus from doughnuts to gas station pizza delivery service across central North Carolina Today there are several large businesses remaining within Buncombe County despite all these changes: Progressive Field—home field for both Asheville startups Natus Vincere FC (now Liverpool FC) & NC Courage FC—and Loew’s Grand National Race Course sit atop rolling hills overlooking downtown Weddinon while other smaller businesses have moved away such as JCPenney.(JCPenney closed its store here around 2009)Weddinon is home also to Walmart Supercenter where you can find gasoline/petrol/schedule control stores along with various sporting goods retailers including GNC Soap Factory outlets Accordingly over $200 million dollars worth of economic activity takes place within driving distance of Weddinon each year! This amount includes 3 million+ visitors who spend an estimated $48 million total annually! With such high tourism visitation numbers coming right near our shores we must ensure that all aspects we provide are top notch so that our citizens can enjoy their stay without feeling uncomfortable or uncomfortable about anything!
