Waynesville is a small town in the Pender County, North Carolina region. The population was 2,814 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Raleigh-Durham Metropolitan Statistical Area. Waynesville is located on State Highway 158, about 12 miles (19 km) northeast of Raleigh and 15 miles (24 km) west of Durham. The first settler in Waynesville was John Byers, who arrived in 1798. In 1820, George Washington Dixon bought some land from Byers for $4 per acre. He named his holdings Gadsden Township after General James Gadsden and his regiment that served under Andrew Jackson during the Mexican–American War. Dixon also donated land to Waynesville for a town site. The first school was built in 1833 and opened to students by mail from Raleigh. The original plat for the town was filed with the deed office on November 10, 1834. A post office called Waynesville had been established in 1840 but closed due to lack of customers; it reopened in 1851 under the name of New Hope until it closed again in 1865 because of problems with postage stamps! In 1885, Drury Lumber Company moved its operations to Waynesville from High Point because of competition from mills closer to Raleigh. That same year saw another important event when Jesse Pickens erected a large frame church on what is now Main Street across from the old Lumber Company building which still stands today as a commercial property known as Pickens Parish Church Annexe). Additionally, several colleges/universities have campuses located within walking distance including UNC Chapel Hill[UCH], Duke University[Duke], Wake Forest University[WFTS]), Wake Tech Community College(WTCC)[WTCC]), Southern Living Institute(SLI)[LINK HERE]; Brown University[] ([BrownUniv]); Randolph-Macon College[] ([RNCColleges])."[16]"

The community was founded in 1819 by John Waynes and his brother Jameson as a small farming village on the Tobacco River. In 1830, Waynesville became an incorporated town when it joined Haywood County. The first mayor of Waynesville wasJoshua Witherspoon. In 1865, Confederate General Jubal Early attacked and burned Waynesville while the town's citizens were gathered around their Churches to watch. Many of the residents died in the fire; many others were taken prisoner and later released without trial or leave to return home. In 1892, waynevillians voted to annex adjacent Unicoi Township so that they could have one school district for all their children within five miles of each other instead of two separate districts within Haywood County which provided education only to white children. In 1923, Oneida School District No 2 merged into Unicoi School District #1 which also included Waynesville proper. A new high school was built in 2000 on Veterans Memorial Drive across from the old Oneida High School site which had been used as a landfill since 1978 until it was converted into a park with playground and tennis courts by local citizens group "Green Hills Park" after years of campaigning by then Mayor Tom Englishman (now Vice President) and City Councilmember Donnie O'Neal Sr.. The original Oneida High School building still stands today as part of Green Hills Park., home to a variety of annual events such as Oktoberfest & Harvest Festival
