Shelby is a small town that includes most of the unincorporated communities of Union Springs and Clarksville. The area now known as Shelby was first settled by Cherokee Indians in the 18th century. In 1786, Colonel James Robertson founded what became Shelby County on land that he had purchased from the Cherokees. The county seat was moved to Union Springs in 1836, but it remained an unincorporated community until 1865 when it became part of the newly created city of Clarksville. In 1923, Alabama Senator Huey Long proposed that Shelby be made a U.S. state, but no action was taken until 1959 when Governor Tom Beasley recommended it to Congress. On March 15, 1959, President John F Kennedy announced plans for a new American embassy in Damascus and recommended that Shelby become one of its anchor cities – an idea supported by then-Senator Robert Byrd (D-WV). The city council approved construction on October 3rd and began operations on November 1st with only 54 residents living in what would eventually become one of America's largest cities with over 2 million people within its limits today! On July 10th 2009 a tornado touched down near downtown Jacksonville just outside of Shelby and caused $5 million in damage before dissipating over night back into rural areas

Lee besieged Raleigh and successfully defends the city from Union forces. As a result of this victory, Raleigh became an important Confederate stronghold and later served as their capital. With the end of the Civil War in 1865, Shelby lost its status as an important military post but continued to grow as a commercial center.
