The Shooters' Heritage Foundation was founded in 1984 with the goal of preserving and promoting the history, culture, and traditions of shooting in Mount Airy, North Carolina. The SHF is a non-profit organization that conducts research on firearms and ammunition production in Mount Airy since its inception. In addition to collecting data on firearms and ammunition from various sources, the SHF also produces a quarterly newsletter called "Guns & Ammo" which is distributed free to members of the rifle club, shotgun society, muzzleloader society, pistol club, and reloading clubs in Mount Airy. One of the most popular items produced by the SHF is gun barrels. Gun barrels are made from many different materials including but not limited to aluminum alloy, brass, steel, Maplewood hardwood or soapstone. There are many different shapes and sizes available for purchase as well as customizations can be made with engraved names or logos on the barrel. The popularity of gun barrels has led to them becoming one of the most common gifts given out at shoots across America. Another popular item produced by the SHF is ammo. Ammo can be bought pre-loaded with rounds or can be created specifically for shooters through manufacturing processes such as hot forging or cold forging techniques. Many shooters prefer reloaded ammo because it provides a more consistent fire every time regardless of weather conditions or terrain. Ammunition can also be purchased in bulk either online or local sporting goods stores. TheSHF has also been responsible for providing scholarships for young shooters statewide since its establishment back in 1984. Mount Airy is a small town located in North Carolina. The population was 7,012 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Asheville-Buncombe County, NC metropolitan area. The original settlers of Mount Airy were white men who arrived in 1796 as refugees from South Carolina. They named their community after Mount Airy, a hill in that state which they saw as a strategic location for defense against Native Americans. The first schools in Mount Airy were built in 1802 and 1804. In 1814, the first post office was established in the town. By 1830, there were six churches and over 100 residents living on what is now Mount Airy Street. In 1870, local citizens voted to incorporate as a village and name it Airysville. That same year, the first jail was built and soon became known as one of the most important jails in North Carolina because it could hold up to 50 offenders at once. In 1958, when Interstate 85 was constructed through Asheville-Buncombe County, much effort was made to integrate Black mountain into the municipality by creating streets with names like "Straight flight" and "Beloved Community." However, only two African American families lived within walking distance of downtown Mountain View until 1969 when they moved into an all-white neighborhood called Hermitage Village which still exists today. Despite this setback, Mount Airy has continued to grow economically and politically throughout its history while remaining racially diverse through social programs such as Foster Kids' Home (now known as Appalachian Children's Shelter), Head Start/Daycare Center (now known as Cherokee Learning Academy), and Job Corps/Preparatory School (now known as Greene Technical Institute). Mount Airy currently boasts three libraries - Presbyterian Library on Church Street; Buncombe County Public Library on Gentry Avenue; and Appalachian Children's Shelter & Resource Library on Park Avenue - making it one of the largest libraries per capita in North Carolina! Additionally there are twelve businesses including four grocery stores(GNC)>, five restaurants(Wine Country Grill & Brewery,, Pisgah Brewing Company., Joe's Pizza., Hometown BBQ), eleven banks(Banner Bank®, NCUA*, SunTrust Banks*, First Federal Savings Bank*), ten lumber yards(Blue Ridge Lumber Co.), six power plants(*Nissan LEAFs*)and two golf courses(*Pinehurst Resort Golf Course& Mt Pleasant Country Club). Today mountairy enjoys more than just its rich cultural heritage: economic opportunities have kept it growing since before Interstate 85 came through! Mount Airy was a peak located in the eastern part of Roanoke County, North Carolina. It was named after Mount Airy, a mountain in Maryland. The peak is now known as Bald Mountain. The first people to live at or near the summit were the Cherokee Indians. The Cherokees left Mount Airy in the early 1800s and moved away from their traditional hunting and gathering site on Bald Mountain. In 1824, white settlers arrived in Roanoke County and began to settle around Bald Mountain. By 1830, there were about 10 families living on Bald Mountain. By 1840, there were 50 families living at or near Mount Airy Peak. On December 17, 1851, an act of Congress designated Mount Airy Peak as a national cemetery for American Indians who had died during the Mexican-American War (1846-1848). The first school that was built at or near Mount Airy was organized in 1873 by Atherton School District #2 leaders J.D. Hamer and Wm Gentry Jr.. In 1893, a post office calledMount Airy was established at the top of Bald Mountain by Alfred Sikes with help from James Davenport Sr.. The first mail service to reach the peak started operating from Macon on June 9th, 1895 using wagons pulled by four horses pulling an ox team upriver to avoid Indian attacks along the route
Mount Airy was founded in 1761 by Major General James Moore. The community grew rapidly due to its natural resources, including coal and marble, as well as its location on the border of North Carolina and South Carolina. By 1819, Mount Airy had a population of 1,500 people. In 1828, the town became a state capital when Raleigh was moved from Durham to the new state capital. Mount Airy continued to grow until it reached its peak in 1840 with 2,400 residents. After a decline in population during the mid-19th century, Mount Airy began to experience an increase in development activity during the 20th century. In recent years, however, there has been a decrease in population and development activity at Mount Airy.
