Mount Airy was a small mountain located in the town of Henderson, North Carolina. The mountain was first mentioned in a 1685 deed and it is thought that the first people to live on Mount Airy were the Hennons. In 1796, General John Sevier donated land to Henderson for use as a military post and Mount Airy became known as Sevier Hill. After the Battle of Guilford Court House in 1802, Confederate General Robert E. Lee decided to establish his headquarters at Mount Airy and ordered all soldiers there to march off towards disgraceful death. A few brave men lingered behind, but they quickly ran into trouble when Party Captain James Longstreet discovered them. Despite being outnumbered four-to-one, Longstreet forced his way through the Union line and arrived at Mount Airy just in time to see Federal troops massacring many of its inhabitants. As punishment for their wickedness, Longstreet had all of these men executed with cannon fire! In 1819, Henderson voted to separate from North Carolina and form its own state called Cumberland County. This led to an upsurge in activity around Mount Airy because people realized that they could finallyestate their property there without having it confiscated by Northern authorities. Consequently, development around mountairy picked up speed and by 1840 it had been renamed Mount Royal after King George III’s new British Crown Colony of Ulster (now Northern Ireland). By 1870, most of what is now Henderson had been annexed into the city of Raleigh and only about 10% remained within the limits of old Henderson Township which still includes parts of present-day Mount Royal Borough. But even though much has changed since then,MountAiry’s history remains largely unchanged – thanks largely to its location right next door to one of North Carolina’s major cities!
