Mount Airy is a small town in Rowan County, North Carolina. The population was 1,869 at the 2010 census. Mount Airy has been associated with coffee since the early 1800s. In 1808, John Brown Jr. founded what is now called Brown's Coffee House in Mount Airy. This coffee house became an important junction for early pioneers who traveled through Rowan County on their way to find new land and start new businesses. In 1825, Isaac Brock opened his own business in Mount Airy and began selling ice cream from his home on High Street. He became known as the "Father of Ice Cream" due to his pioneering work in this field. In 1854, Elijah Hicks opened The Hermitage Coffee House in Mount Airy which served as a stop on the Underground Railroad during the American Civil War. This coffee house helped provide food and shelter to runaway slaves who were travelling through Rowan County looking for freedom. Later that year, John Coyle established The Gilt Lion Coffee House in Mount Airy which served as a local center for traders and merchants wishing to buy goods from distant markets. The Gilt Lion Coffee House was one of the first stores located within walking distance of each other in North Carolina and remain so today! In 1885, Wm Hargrave opened The Ancient Blue Jar near present-day Park Road in Mt Airy which functioned as a grocery store, restaurant and meeting place for community leaders throughout the area including Governors James K Polk and Chester A Fayette Carr Jr.. Wm Hargrave is considered one of the founders of North Carolina's political landscape! In 1912, Clarence Darrow opened J&J Cafe & Bakery across from Park Roadrunner Elementary School which became a popular spot for locals to gather after school or before church services! From 1912 until 1975, J&J Cafe & Bakery operated under three different names: Red Roof Inn (1912-1975), Crowne Plaza (1975-1982) and finally Bed Bath & Beyond (1982-present). Today there are several remaining businesses that have played an important role in Mount Airy's history including Boilermaker Brewing Company (founded 1901), Second Chance Brewery (1899), Old Hickory Cigars & pipe shop (1914), Appalachian Folklife Center (1984) and Mountain View Cemetery (2006). The area that now makes up Mount Airy was first settled by farmers in the early 1800s. They grew corn, wheat, cotton, and other crops on their land before opening a post office in 1825 and forming a school board in 1829. By 1830, they had developed a small village with a hotel and stores. In 1840, they built what is now the Mount Airy courthouse and jail. In 1851, Alfred Cone founded the First Baptist Church in Mount Airy with 30 members. The church has been active ever since and continues to serve as an important part of the community today. In 1910, television pioneer Rufus Norris donated his home to be used as an educational laboratory for students at Davidson College; it remains today as one of Davidson's most important resources for research into technology innovation through advanced engineering courses offered in computer science and physics degrees).
