Mount Airy is a small town located in the Granville County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 881 at the 2010 census. Mount Airy is part of the Durham, NC Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first people to live in what is now Mount Airy were Native Americans who came to the area during the late eighteenth century. In 1794, General Hugh Blair and his army invaded North Carolina and burned down much of what is now Mount Airy as he went search for Indian allies who had helped him fight against British forces in Canada. During World War II, Mount Airy served as a Liberator airfield from which Allied pilots flew missions over Japan during the war. After the war ended, many military families moved into what is now Mount Airy and began farming their homes on land that had been used for airbase purposes. Mount Airy was platted in 1868 by Jno Copley Pollack, an American surveyor who was working on a road between Charlotte and Raleigh. Pollack named his community after Lord Byron’s home village of Ayrshire in Scotland –Airyankee (later renamed Mount Airy). The first post office opened in 1870; it closed in 1880 because of lack of customers. In 1907, local authorities built a school which still stands today; it became known as “the Alma Mater School” because its founders wanted to create an environment where students could develop strong educational ties with one another outside of school hours. The early years of mountairy were very difficult due to limited resources such as water and timber; however through hard work and determination by residents over time things started to change for the better beginning around 1912 when Wm Gwynn bought some property north of town from Jno Hennrichs for $5 per acre ($100 per square mile).
