Mount Airy is a small town in Alamance County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Raleigh-Durham metropolitan area. Mount Airy is located on U.S. Route 421 south of Raleigh and east of Durham. The first permanent settler in what is now Mount Airy was James White in 1792. By 1800, there were about 25 families living hereabouts and some agriculture was done with hogs, horses and hempen cloth; but all these enterprises failed because no market could be found for such products within easy reach of the townspeople. In 1821 Samuel Ashe became one of the incorporators of Alamance County and organized its government as a county seat; but he did not live to see its establishment as a dry county seat under his name because he died suddenly while travelling from Wilmington to Cary on October 12th following year (1821). The first courthouse in Mount Airy was built by Judge John Southerland around 1829-30, when Alamance County had only four countieships – Alamance, Atwater, Orange and Randolph – each headed by a sheriff or justice who administered justice according to law rather than appointing justices themselves like many other jurisdictions then existing in America. Amarion Baptist Church which stands today on South Tryon Street (then Chapel Street) was initially built back around 1827-28 as an addition to the Old Presbyterian Church which sat on what are now New Market Avenue and Spring Garden Road near present day Wake Forest University Campus. Mount Airy was once a prominent mountain in North Carolina. The name comes from the Welsh word "mountaintop," which means top of a mountain. The mountain is located in Orange County, and its peak is at 6,561 feet above sea level. The first people to live on Mount Airy were the Lenape Indians. They named the mountain after their ancestor, Mount Airy, who lived in what is now Delaware County. In 1735, Governor John Randolph recommended that the county be formed out of land that was donated by Sir Walter Raleigh. The county was created on July 15, 1735, and it included present-day Orange County as well as parts of Davidson and Mecklenburg counties. Mount Airy became an important military installation during the Revolutionary War. General George Washington used Mount Airy as his headquarters during the Battle of Brandywine Creek in 1777. After the war ended, Mount Airy underwent several renovations and improvements. One of these projects was to create a powder magazine at its peak so that ammunition could be stored safely without fear of firewood depletion or theft by enemy forces. In 1837, President James Kenedyer designated Mount Airy as a national monument due to its historical significance and unique environment. Today, Mountairy remains an important tourist destination in Northern Carolina because of its scenic views and interesting history
Mount Airy was founded in 1781 by Revolutionary War General Nathanael Greene. After the war, Mount Airy became a center for culture and learning, hosting such luminaries as George Washington and Thomas Paine. The community eventually declined during the 19th century due to natural disasters, although it regained some of its former cachet in the 20th century through its role as an agricultural center. today Mount Airy is a census-designated place (CDP) with a population of 851 people.
