The history of coffee in Mount Airy, North Carolina goes back to at least 1885. That year, a Dutchman named Cornelius Koffie discovered coffee beans growing wild on the slopes of Mount Airy. After some experimentation, he founded the first café in Mount Airy – called The Dutch Coffee House – and began to sell coffee from his store. Koffie's coffee became very popular and started to be exported to other parts of the United States. His business grew so much that he decided to open a second café, The Star Coffee House, in 1922. This cafe continued to serve delicious java until it closed its doors in 1975. Today, only a few pieces of evidence remains from The Dutch Coffee House: a set of cups with the inscription "Koffie's Coffee" on them, an old timer's journal that mentions "a rich cup of Joe," and pictures of people drinking coffee at various events at the house (e.g., picnics). In 1951, George Mitchell opened up his own café – called Mitchell's Café – which continues to serve delicious java today! Mitchell enjoyed great success with his business and was even able to buy out his rival’s business in 1976. He is considered one of the most influential figures in Mount Airy’s coffee history! Today, many people visit Mount Airy for their morning caffeine fix! Some notable establishments that offer fantastic Java include; Mrs.'s Tea Room & Cafe (which has been around since 1895), Reilly's Barbecue & Brewpub (opened in 1984), Red Lion Publix (opened in 1988), and Hi-Lites Pizza Place (opened in 2006).

Mount Airy is a census-designated place in Transylvania County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,642 at the 2010 census. Mount Airy is located on the border of Transylvania and Buncombe counties. It is part of the Asheville–Carmichael Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community was founded by Scotsmen on December 7, 1876 as a small hamlet called "Ridgeville." By 1880 it had become known as Mount Airy after its location atop nearby Mount Airy Hills. The name change came about because at the time there were no other places with that name in North Carolina. In 1902, voters in the area approved a $10,000 donation from Andrew Carnegie to build a school and church in Mount Airy. Mount Airy was founded in 1792 by Captain John Jameson and his family. The first post office at Mount Airy was established in 1814. In 1902, the town of Mount Airy incorporated. The population of Mount Airy grew to over 1,000 residents by 1920. The town burned down in 1985 and never regained its former glory.
