Coast guard gift history in Mount Airy, North Carolina began with the creation of the Mount Airy Coast Guard Station on December 21, 1912. The station was part of the Department of Motor Vehicles and was located at 11th Street and Market Place. On November 1, 1913, the coast guard station moved to its current location at 12th Street and Church Road. In 1923, a new tower was built on site which served as the first command center for the coast guard. In 1959, another tower was built which served as a barracks for officers and their families. In 1992, a new terminal building was dedicated which housed all types of supplies for the coast guard including bathrooms and kitchens. In 2006, another terminal building was dedicated which serve as both headquarters for the north-central area coastal patrol unit and also houses a library system for employees of the coastguard detachment stationed in that area. Today, Mount Airy is home to one of four U.S. Coast Guard detachments based in North Carolina (the other three are in Virginia Beach; Portsmouth; and New London). This allows for more flexibility when it comes to providing services to local communities along our state’s coastline. The oceanography research center located on campus provides ongoing education opportunities to seaographers from across America while also serving as an important resource for fishing enthusiasts throughout southeastern North Carolina

The storeskeeper, Elijah Henson, managed to get word to nearby Christiansburg before being captured by Union forces. When asked what he knew about Confederate General Robert E. Lee's whereabouts, Henson replied "I know nothing." Mount Airy remained an important local center for several years until it was abandoned by its citizens during Reconstruction efforts in 1871-1872. The town failed to renew its incorporation as a municipality until 1985 when it joined the newly created Dare County. Over time, Mount Airy has become popular with history buffs and tourists who enjoy exploring its unique architecture and lingering memories of its once thriving community life.
Mount Airy was founded in 1792 by Captain John Ashe and his wife Deborah. The town prospered because of the production of tobacco, rice, and other crops. In 1827, Mount Airy became the county seat of Wilson County.
