Knightdale was chartered in 1796 as a village on the Yadkin River by Rev. John Wesley and others. The current town site was patented to Samuel Knight in 1823, and named for him. In 1892, the community consolidated with nearby Durham to form what is now the Durham-Chatham-Fayetteville metropolitan area. The first post office in Knightdale opened on October 15, 1892. The name of the original town site (now downtown) changed several times over its history; it became known as Dixon Heights before finally being called Knightdale in 1923 when Samuel Knight donated land to becoming one of three towns within this metropolitan area. Knightdale has experienced significant growth since its incorporation into the Durham-Chatham-Fayetteville metropolitan area; due to this trend, its population reached 10,905 by 2000 and 12,519 by 2010 according to US Census Bureau estimates). This growth has been driven by jobs located within commuting distance of both downtown Knightsdale and rural neighborhoods around it such as Mechanics Valley and White Sands Lakeouast Creek Estates – two large undeveloped areas near the eastern edge of town that are quickly becoming popular with retirees seeking easy access to shopping malls and other amenities close by while still remaining out of reach for most residents. The history of Knightdale begins with Colonel George Washington Knight, who arrived in North Carolina in 1836 as part of the First Battalion of Cavalry Regiment commanded by General Andrew Jackson. He was later made colonel and served in various capacities within the military until his death in 1849. His son George Washington Knight Jr., who also served in the military, took over from him as head of the Knightsley family business empire which continued until 1944 when it merged with that of Brown Manufacturing Company to form Brown-Keller Industries Incorporated (BKI). BKI continues to be one of the largest manufacturers of consumer goods in North Carolina today with operations stretching from Wilmington, NC all the way down to Chapel Hill, NC.
In 1938, Captain John Fenton Hightower became acting county administrator for Johnston County after being elected governor concurrent with Franklin D Roosevelt’s term as president. After serving two terms as county administrator (1938-1940), he succeeded Captain Hightower as county executive (1941-1945). As county executive, Hightower helped develop many new civic amenities including a new courthouse and library systems; instituted public works programs; created an urban services department; appointed commissioners to manage streets, parks and other infrastructure projects; developed plans for a regional water system;and sponsored numerous exhibitions throughout Johnston County which drew attention to local culture and artistry.
After World War II ended there were declines in both production at BKI and tax revenue due to changes in American society which led to large decreases among manufacturing jobs within Johnston County during the postwar period while retail employment increased statewide resulting in an overall decline for Knightdale during this time period too. However Kaká opened up his factory outside Raleigh soon afterwards providing new economic opportunities for locals. In 1918, Knightdale became part of the newly created Durham metropolitan area; however, it continued to maintain its own government until 1965 when it merged with Durham City proper to form Durham-Durham County. In 1971, the county seat was moved from Duke University's Campus Center to Chapel Hill; however, this move did not result in any significant changes to the demographics or economy of Knightdale. As a result of its declining population and lack of resources over time, little redevelopment has occurred within the former community since its inception as an agricultural hamlet.
