Holly Springs is a town in Gaston County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,521 at the 2010 census. The Holly Springs Post Office was established in 1875 and discontinued operation in 1951. The first permanent settler of what would become Holly Springs was James Fenton who arrived here on horseback from Tennessee in 1814. By 1820 there were twenty-six families living here with a total of five hundred acres (2 km²). In 1840 nightingale Johnnie Caldwell settled near the present site of Holly Springs after being driven out of hisMaccoby Parish plantation by heavy taxation. For many years this important center of culture and education for both men and women attracted people from all over the state and beyond to its meetings, lectures, balls, readings, operas and other events. In 1865 an act passed by the General Assembly designated what is now Gaston County as “Gaston County Seat” for the purpose of providing more centralized government with which to deal with increasing numbers of settlers moving into this area. This move also served as a way to consolidate land ownership among different farming families within one county so that they could be taxed together rather than separately each time they sold their acreage or leased it out. On January 1st 1870 a post office called "Holly Springs" was opened at what is now downtown Holly Springs by Wm Hanchett & Co.. On July 10th 1865 Jno Crampton inaugurated mail service between Jacksonville (Florida) and Gastonia (North Carolina) via eastbound express trains running through Union Station in Charlotte; however due to Confederate efforts to block railroads during the American Civil War passenger traffic ceased altogether on December 14th 1865 just days before Christmas! It's believed that package deliveries stopped because residents didn't want Confederate flags on their homes!
