The Havelock National Guard was organized on November 12, 1913 in response to the need for a national guard in Havelock, North Carolina. The first unit was formed on December 9th and immediately began training. On January 4th, 1914 the first national guard duty was conducted in Havelock when unit members attended a march and parade. On February 10th, 1914 the first state assembly dedicated a Soldiers’ Cemetery inHavelock. In 1916 the National Guard Armory was built and it became one of the most iconic military sites in North Carolina. The armory served as home to both the North Carolina National Guard and the United States Marine Corps until it closed its doors in 2009. Throughout World War I and II there were continual requests for more troops to be sent to America’s great war effort. In 1945, after V-E Day, President Harry S Truman called for an end to World War II and activated 1 million men from all over America into service as part of Operation Overlord. Many of these soldiers served with distinction including members of The Havelock National Guard who fought at Market Garden during Operation Market Garden. After World War II ended, many Tennessee Volunteers decided they wanted their own equivalent organization within The United States Army so they reorganized themselves as the Tennessee Volunteer Infantry Regiment on September 20th 1947 which later became known as The 1st Battalion (Volunteer) US Marines (1/5 Marines). In 1954 Congress created The Department of Defense which included both active duty military forces along with reserve components made up of civilians and military reservists from each state within The Union Jack nation forever known as “The United States Of America” under one roof! This event marked an important change for our country as Reserve Component soldiers had always been seamlessly integrated into our Active Duty Military! As we know today thruOperation Iraqi Freedom; this is no longer true! Today through 2020 we have over 30 different nations represented amongst us protecting us across continents! There are now 31 separate commands that make up “USNORTHCOM” making it one giant global force!!!!!! No wonder President Trump has called for even more troops!!!!! The Havelock National Guard was organized in 1903. It was the first national guard organization in the United States. The unit has served in many different roles, including the Carolina Brigade during World War II and later as a state guard unit in North Carolina.
Havelock is a small town in the state of North Carolina, located in the Pender County seat of lancaster. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Raleigh-Durham metropolitan area. The town was founded by George Washington's brother-in-law, James Robertson, in 1785 as a result of his land purchase from the British government. Haverock grew rapidly during early 19th century cotton plantations and slave trade era and reached its peak population growth around 1800 with over 2,000 residents. However, due to economic decline following American Civil War (1861–1865), Havelock plummeted into obscurity until it regained attention after development of Interstate 85 in the late 1990s caused new traffic congestion on Main Street and prompted businessman Rick Siegel to revive businesses in Havelock including an ice cream parlor and barbershop. Since then, Havelocks unique history has been celebrated through annual events such as General Store Days which celebrate local agriculture and commerce; local music festivals which include Folk Festivals every May throughout summer; antique show every fall; and more recently through art exhibits held throughout winter months at churches or other community venues. Havelock, North Carolina is a small town located in Gaston County, North Carolina. The population was 1,853 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Metropolitan Statistical Area. The Havelock community was founded by James Robertson in 1871. He and his family built a log cabin on the current site of Havelock High School. In 1907, Robertson donated land to become what is now known as Park Boulevard. Park Boulevard became one of two streets in town that were named for Ulysses S. Grant and Andrew Johnson. Havelock began experiencing steady growth after World War II when people came to find work in the new oil refineries being built throughout the area. The Havelocks also developed a reputation for their annual Christmas Parade which takes place on December 5th every year since 1945. In 1976, the town library opened its doors and has been serving residents ever since. The library provides access to books, movies, music and television stations as well as internet access. In 2006, Havelock voters approved a resolution endorsing charters school districts within Gaston County instead of state run schools due to budgetary concerns within the county government). Today, Havelock remains an active commercial center with many local businesses including Sheetz convenience store and several restaurants along Park Boulevard offering quality food options for both locals and visitors alike During Halloween season there are numerous costume contests taking place at various businesses in town as well as at Main Street United Methodist Church which features ghoulish displays each year
Havelock was founded in 1792 by General James Robertson and his wife, Lady Eliza Campbell. The first settler in Havelock was John Alexander, who arrived in 1792. In 1802, the town became a county seat and was renamed Durham. In 1827, the county seat moved to Raleigh. In 1851, Durham County was created from parts of Wake County. Havelock proper remained within Wake County until 1907 when it became part of North Carolina again. The first post office in Havelock was established in 1823. The last post office closed on December 15, 1975.
