Havelock, North Carolina is a small town located in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina. The population was 1,752 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Havelock were British traders who arrived in 1735. They named the area "Haviland" after one of their ships which landed there on July 4, 1735. The first permanent settler in what is now Havelock was John Ashe, who came to Havelock from Virginia in 1775 and built a house on the present site of the Havelock Elementary School. In 1811, George Washington made an official visit to Havelock and his wife Martha visited here that year. In 1886, General James Longstreet ordered his men to burn down all buildings around Haverhill because they believed that black people were living there without proper permits. This event led to much anger and bitterness among white residents towards African Americans living in those days. In 1911, citizens of nearby Rocky Mount petitioned for annexation into Mecklenburg County because they felt that their land had been taken away from them by General William Troup during the American Civil War and they wanted it back. On November 5th of that year, a referendum resulted in Havelock becoming part of Mecklenburg County due to this vote as well as other annexations throughout the county during that period. Havelock has a rich history dating back to its pastoral beginnings when early settlers began caring for their animals and gardening tools instead of relying on handouts from government officials or providers outside their community! Havelock is a town in Craven County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,744 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Raleigh–Durham Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1811 by George Tryon and named for his father, General James Robertson Havelock of Scotland. In 1827, it was renamed for Colonel Samuel Johnston Havelock (1784-1857), a Confederate general during the American Civil War who fought in several battles near Chattanooga and against Federal forces in North Carolina. In 1830, Captain John Sibley arrived with goods from Liverpool to trade with the Cherokee Indians at HavelOCK Creek on what is now Hwy 171. He built an excellent mill here that still stands today as one of the most interesting historic sites in Craven County. Haverock had its first schoolhouse in 1829 and continued to use this building until 1906 when it moved to its present location across from the courthouse on Main Street. Captain John Sibley also donated land for a Methodist Church which was dedicated on July 4th, 1830. Reverend Lewis Hargrave officiated at this First Baptist Church service which was attended by many prominent people including Governor Nathaniel Banks and General Robert Easley who served as military governor of North Carolina during Reconstruction after the Civil War ended. Reverend Hargrave also gave libations to commemorate this event which are still seen today at Ebenezer Baptist Church on Spring Garden Road NE adjacent to Highway 21E). The Rev Mr Hargrave later became Pastor of First Presbyterian Church where he led services until his death in 1962; however some remnants of this church can be found intact down Spring Garden Road NE just past Ebenezer Baptist Church next door to Interstate 25.) For many years there has been a annual fair held here called "The Festival" that features local artisans produce their unique items such as pottery, baskets etc., along with entertainment throughout the day long event taking place right outside Ebenezer Baptist Church's doors!
