Graham and his crew of the brig "Alacrity" from Savannah, Georgia after their successful discovery of gold in Cherokee Nation soil near what is now downtown Goldsboro. The town became a center for gold mining and stock speculation during the late 19th century as America's rush to find new sources of wealth led to dramatic increases in its population and economy. By 1910, however, goldmining had ceased operations in favor of other pursuits such as cotton gin production and other small-scale agricultural endeavors. In recent years, Goldsboro has become an important commercial and cultural center within eastern Forsyth County due to its location on Interstate 85 between Raleigh and Charlotte metropolitan areas.
