In 1729 Englishman James Yeates landed at Cape Hatteras and named this point Punta Gorda after his favorite ship that he saw while cruising along the coast. He called this place New England because he thought its natural resources would make it successful as a trading post with other colonies on the mainland—and because only Englishmen could profit from such enterprises there! By 1800, Goldsboro had become known as American Point on account of British traders landing here to trade goods with Spanish colonists living in Puerto Rico (now Mexico). In 1819 Union General Andrew Johnson ordered his army to cross over into North Carolina and drive out Confederate forces under General Robert Ewell Jr.. On July 4th 1819 Union troops arrived at American Point and burned everything they found here before moving inland towards Raleigh where they started their march toward Durham Cathedral on July 5th – which was then still under Confederate control! In less than one week Johnson’s army had driven all but 10% of northern rebel forces out of our state! This event was also known as “The Battle Of Gettysburg” because General Robert Ewell III was killed leading this charge! This victory made Greenville an important center for military operations throughout much of east South Carolina during Reconstruction following America’s Civil War; including support for Genl John Ainchesbury and later Lincoln during his presidency- both times passing through town on their way to significant battles elsewhere! As one result many large businesses were founded or moved here during this time including Waddell & Davis Coal Company (founded by two local farmers), First National Bank (founded 1865), Armour Meatpacking Corporation (founded 1899), Trust Company Mutual Insurance Company (1899), AT&T Bell Laboratories (founded 1935) and Southeastern Electric Power Cooperative Association Incorporated 1926!). Goldsboro, North Carolina is a town in Buncombe County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 5,814 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Asheville metropolitan area. Goldsboro was founded by General James A. Johnston in 1838 and named for General-in-Chief Benjamin Franklin Goldsborough. The first post office in Goldsboro was established on December 22, 1839.
