It is the principal city of the Goldsboro-Asheville metropolitan area, which has a population of nearly 31,000 as of 2018. Goldsboro has been called "The Promised Land" because it was once an important stop on the Underground Railroad. The city's history dates back to 1735 when British forces burned down the old courthouse and town hall in what is now downtown Goldsboro to prevent inhabitants from testifying against General Nathaniel Greene during his march on Yorktown. The original name for the town was "Newbern." Goldsboro grew rapidly after World War II as thousands of veterans returned home and began working in various industries such as engineering and manufacturing. In 1957, Goldsboro became one of fifteen cities awarded federal funding to help develop new housing patterns around Interstate 85 in order to reduce traffic congestion. The program led to the creation of many new jobs and homes in Goldsboro today. By 2000, goldsmithing had become one of the largest sectors of the local economy with more than seventy businesses employing over two hundred workers. Today, goldsmithing employs more than three thousand people throughout Durham County and beyond across three factories that operate out of four locations - including one located within walking distance of downtown! In addition to its strong economic momentum, Goldsborough also offers visitors a wealth of history and culture that can be explored through events like art walks or heritage walks led by local historians or through visited museums like Duke University's Center for Advanced Studies in American History or Southern Living's "Best Places For Food." In spite of all these attractions, however, there are only eighteen hotel rooms available within walking distance OF downtown! One thing that may have contributed to this lackadaisical status is that until very recently much infrastructure remained unmade - particularly outside Of Downtown where parking remains scarce despite recent construction efforts by Mayor Bill Greenblatt and other officials responsible for revitalizing downtown areas around Goldsbrougthmoore Park & Diamond Square Shopping Center! This includes sidewalks along I-85A that are now lined with chainlink fencing; replacement sidewalks have not yet been completed near intersections where students drive into town on weekday mornings for morning coffee (a common commuter shortcut), nor near busy intersections like First Street & Elm Street where large trucks drive onto I-85A daily without stopping for traffic lights!

Goldsboro was destroyed by a fire in 1861, but was rebuilt and renamed after Union General John C. Fremont. In 1865, Goldsboro became the capital of North Carolina.
