The Goldsboro Army National Guard has been a part of the United States Armed Forces since 1942. The unit was organized on December 12, 1941 and activated on February 1, 1942. The first unit to arrive in North Carolina was the 4th Infantry Regiment from Fort Worth, Texas. The 4th Infantry Regiment fought in World War II and also served in the Korean War. From its activation until today, there have been over 10,000 soldiers who have served with the Goldsboro Army National Guard. Many of these Soldiers have given their lives for our country and we thank them every day for their service. Today’s members of the Goldsboro Army National Guard are proud to wear America’s colors and represent her around the world. The unit is composed of infantry battalions (the 3rd Battalion being located in Hendersonville), artillery batteries (1st Battery stationed at Camp Lejeune), Air Mobile Battalions (2nd Battalion located at Raleigh-Durham Airport) as well as support units such as engineers and infantry scouts. In addition to military duty, many Guardsmen participate in community service projects throughout eastern North Carolina including help with food pantries and homeless shelters; providing emotional support during natural disasters such as hurricanes or earthquakes; working with local schools to promote physical education; or participating in car wash programs

The regiment fought in the Battle of Gettysburg on July 4, 1863. In 1865 the unit surrendered at Appomattox Court House in Virginia.

A post office called Goldsboro was established in 1876 and remained in operation until it closed in 1915.
