Asheboro is a town in Caldwell County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 7,451 at the 2010 census. Asheboro is the seat of Caldwell County. The first settler in what would become Asheboro was James Robertson in 1792. He built a cabin on the present site of downtown Asheboro and named it for his home county of Scotland. The first post office in Asheboro was established in 1827 and was known as "Caldwell". In 1876, A. P. Hill founded the First National Bank of Asheboro which remains one of the largest banks in eastern North Carolina to this day with over $220 million assets under management as of 2018. In 1907, Drury Davison bought land east of downtown Asheboro from John Hatton for $10 per acre (equal to $ ). Davison laid out a new town called "Ashburton" on these acres and named it after himself and also donated land to support it including riverfront property to the south and east which still forms part of downtown Asheboro today. The original town had a population of only 100 people but within 5 years they had enlarged it to 1,500 people with an arsenal/armory, grocery store/pantry, hospital/ Dispensary (now known asASHBOROUGH HEALTHCARE), public school system (now known asASHBOROUGH K-12 SCHOOLS), ice cream parlor/candy store (now known asASHBOROUGH ICE CREAM PARLORS), three churches (Church Of Christ Scientist- now known asASHBOROUGH CHRISTIAN SCIENTIST Church; Methodist Episcopal - now known by its original name – First Baptist - nowknown by its current name – Third Presbyterian - both located on Main Street; Presbyterian - now know by its current name – First Baptist) and much more modern amenities such as Streetscape Improvements Program that has helped make downtown Asheboro one of Eastern NC's most vibrant communities since its inception over 60 years ago!
