The town quickly grew into a busy commercial center with warehouses, stores, and homes lining the main streets. During the Revolutionary War, White Plains became an important supply stop for General George Washington's army. Many of the soldiers who fought at Bunker Hill were based here including Benedict Arnold and Israel Putnam. In 1814, White Plains was incorporated as a village under the name of "Newtown". It declined during the 1830s as manufacturing industry moved out to larger cities such as Buffalo or Rochester. However, it regained some popularity in the 1850s when white Protestants seeking to escape antiracism started moving into the area from surroundinggentrified towns like Niagara Falls or Syracuse. White Plains continued to grow through post-war centuries until its annexation by New York City in 1898.
