White Plains, New York is the largest city in the county of Westchester, and is also one of the most populous cities in New York City. It was founded by English settlers in 1624 as a small trading post on the Hudson River. White Plains was an important economic center during the Revolutionary War and became a part of New York City. The population peaked at around 100,000 in 1920 and has since decreased to around 50,000 today. However, White Plains remains an important cultural and commercial center for Central New York. The city is located on Long Island Sound between Manhattan and Queens, about 30 miles (48 km) north of New York City proper. The town of White Plains was founded by colonists from England on November 3rd, 1624 as part of what would become Westchester County.
