Tarrytown is a small town in upstate New York, located on the shores of Lake Erie. The population was 5,813 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Utica–Rome, NY Micropolitan Statistical Area. Tarrytown is known for its architecture and for being one of the most popular tourist destinations in Upstate New York. The first Europeans to visit Tarrytown were French traders in 1664. The name "Tarrytown" was derived from an Iroquois word meaning "the place where tree bark can be found." The town was founded by colonists from Ulster County, Ireland in 1792 as a port on the Great Lakesway. In 1807, Tarrytown became a village and then a town when it joined Rome Township (now Utica-Rome Borough) Yankee Fork Road north of present-day Webster Avenue. The early settlers were farmers who raised crops andchickens until they developed mills that produced flour and paper products such as soap and hats. During World War II, Tarrytown played an important role as the site of two Air Force bases: Oswego Air Base on Clinton Street and Niagara Falls Air Base on Tryon Street (). After the war ended, many businesses closed but others continued to operate until around 1960 when most manufacturing left for other parts of Upstate New York due to technological developments across America. One exception was medical equipment company American Medical Supply which still operates out of Tarrytown today (). Tarrytown is a small town in the Catskills region of New York State. It is located on the southern edge of the hamlet of West Tarrytown, and lies north of Interstate 87. The population was 7,550 at the 2010 census. The first settlers in what is now Tarrytown were farmers who arrived in 1786 from Connecticut. They named their land for George Washington, as they believed he would protect it from attack by the French. In 1815, General James Knopp moved his headquarters to Tarrytown from Albany after taking command of American forces besieging Napoleon's army at Waterloo. Knopp was posthumously awarded the Congressional Gold Medal for his services in this battle. In 1892, Timothy Dwight purchased 1,000 acres (400 hectares) of forested land east of what is now downtown Tarrytown and developed it into an agricultural center known as Dwight Park. This area eventually became known as East Harlem; however, most people consider Tarrytown its original name because Timothy Dwight became its first mayor there in 1894. The name was changed back toTarrytown in 1970 whenEast Harlem became part of construction projects aimed at expanding subway service into areas outside Manhattan that were considered rural or undeveloped before that time. Today, much of Downtown Tarrytown remains unchanged since its incorporation over 150 years ago: There are still a few stores and restaurants lining Main Street between Clinton and Lafayette Streets; there are also a few large buildings used for housing such as One Market Place and Rockefeller Center Plaza; but most importantly one can find many small businesses clustered around First Congregational Church on North Clinton Street which has been home to some notable residents including Mayor Fiorello LaGuardia and Gov. Nelson Rockefeller among others Many locals still refer to themselves simply as "tary Townies".
In 1784, Tarrytown was founded by John Clinton and his wife. It was named after the town of Tarsus in Turkey. The first settler in Tarrytown was Sir George Washington who had a farm there in1786. In 1812, the town was renamed for Lord Elgin who donated land to it. The first post office in Tarrytown opened in 1814. In 1827, the town became part of New York State and changed its name to Tarrytown Heights.
