The Schenectady Air National Guard's (A-G) 176th Airlift Wing provides humanitarian services in the form of airlift and cargo flights to support military and civilian populations in crisis regions around the world. The wing has been providing airlift services since World War II. In 1947, the wing was redesignated as the 176th Airlift Wing (Air National Guard). It became a full-time unit on September 1, 1951 when it gained its current name. In 1960, the wing was activated for Operation Neptune's Spear which involved flying supplies to Vietnam from United States bases in Okinawa. The 176th's C-130 Hercules transports provided critical lift during the deployment. In 1992, Hurricane Andrew passed over Schenectady while exercises were taking place at Lackland AFB in San Antonio TX; as a result of this event Flight 153 crashed into an agricultural field near Milton Center killing all ten passengers and one crewmember. This put a damper on plans for Operation Magic Carpet III which would have seen 154 planes fly to Orlando FL for Christmas gifts for military families stationed there that year. On December 12, 1993, after much deliberation by both wings members and management, it was decided thatOperation Santa Claus would be renamedOperation Thanksgiving due to concerns about possible negative publicity caused by Hurricanes Andrew and Monica . On October 15, 1998 weather conditions over New York City led to major restrictions on airspace over Manhattan resulting in cancellations of several overflights by commercial airlines; however 175 C-130 Hercules flights were able to land at John F Kennedy Airport instead with only two brief interruption during those few hours Additionally three CF-18 Hornets from Elmira AB replaced missing A-6 Intruders from Schodack AFB; these aircraft are also used for overflights over New York City
