Navy gifts have been a part of the Ossining community for many years. The shipyards in New York City produced some of the most famous and luxurious warships in history, and the navy became an important part of their economy. The first naval gift was given to the town by Commodore John Rodgers in 1814. It was a gift of HMS Beagle, a coal-fired ship that had been used in exploring Australia and South America. The town donated two pieces of furniture, three chairs, eight tables, four chests, six lamps, five shotguns, one rifle and one powder horn to the navy. In 1846, the town gave another set of naval gifts to the navy when it donated HMS Cerberus. This ship was used as guard duty at Fort Niagara during the American Civil War. The town also spent $1,500 on repairs for her after she was damaged by a cannonball during battle. The next Naval gift from Ossining was given to the navy in 1907 when it donated USS Constitution Museum Ship No 1. This vessel dated back to 1797 and was originally built as a fishing boat for captains who traveled between Long Island Sound and Staten Island. She served as a training vessel for new sailors before being sold to the navy in 1926 and becoming USS Constitution Museum Ship No 2. In 1954 she underwent restoration that added new decks housing exhibitions about maritime history from around New York State including ships from Ossining’s past! In 2007 Congress passed legislation recognizing Naval Vessel week which celebrates Sailors who have made significant contributions to our country’s defense through their service within our Armed Forces! Ossining, New York is a small town in upstate New York. It is located in the Town of Ossining on the southern border of Chenango County. The population was 7,851 at the 2010 census. Ossining is one of the most important centers in rural Upstate New York, and it has been called "the jewel of central New York." The area that now makes up Ossining was first settled by Germans in the early 1800s. They built a small community on high ground near today's High School and post office. In 1814, when Albany County was created from part of Genesee County, Ossining became part of Albany Township. In 1825, a group of farmers led by Nicholas Slocum founded what would become Ossining Academy as an agricultural college for young men. The school continued to grow until it moved to its present site in 1884. Today, there are over 100 students at Ossining Academy including many who attend for undergraduate and graduate degrees as well as training programs related to agriculture and non-agricultural subjects such as business administration and marketing. As more people arrived in the area during the 19th century, they started building homes with big lots that could accommodate their growing families. The biggest development took place around 1900 when developers bought large tracts of land around High School and began developing what is now downtown Ossining into a center for shopping, dining, culture and education; Osage Hills also emerged as a bedroom community for wealthy landowners south of town. During World War II there were several bombings that damaged or destroyed numerous buildings in downtown Ossining but no loss resulted from enemy action against military targets inside or outside town limits; however between 1945-1947 about thirty homes were dynamited by German forces occupying America after American troops had withdrawn fromWorld War II (this raid was also known as "The Blitz"). This bombing campaign effectively endedangerous anti-aircraft activity throughout much of Upstate NY due to heavy use by local police forces during wartime . Today all property north eastof Main Street off exit 4A have been preserved & open to public visitation while all other properties within city limits remain zoned industrial

Ossining is a village in Westchester County, New York, United States. The population was 5,898 at the 2010 census. Ossining is located on the southern edge of the town of Westchester and northeast ofamanco. It is on the east bank of the Hudson River, just north of I-787 and south of NY-101. The first permanent settler in Ossining was Nicholas Fenton in 1785. A gristmill was built here in 1806 by John Nicolay and Stephen Girard. The village began to form as a result of land purchases from farmers around this time. In 1821, Revolutionary War veteran Robert Fulton constructed a wharf at what is now Main Street for shipping goods upriver to Albany; Ossining dockyard became Fulton's main business interest here. Fulton also developed a sugar refinery at what is now Pearl Street (now part of Ossining School District). This led to an increase in manufacturing activity here: pottery, silk screening mills, bricks and mortar businesses sprang up along Pearl Street between 1800 and 1900; these have all since closed down or been converted into condos/apartments. In 1875, Alfred Sennett opened his famous department store here which would become one of America's most successful retail enterprises – it survived until 1978 when it merged with Macy's parent company Federated Department Stores Corporation. A post office was established at Ossining on April 1, 1876; it served residents until 1913 when there were only farming villages left in Westchester County so no mail moved through the area anymore! In 1924-25 local architect Edward Condon designed two buildings that are still extant within Ossining Village limits: One is known as "The General", built on Route 9 near where US 41 intersects Route 9W; it housed several small businesses including a bakery owned by Mrs Edwards (whose husband ran Gertrude Stein’s restaurant nearby), while the other building known as "The White House" stands today next door to Oneonta State University (now Orange) at 655 First Avenue South after being donated by Mrs John Puskarik following his death in 1957 . It served as both an elementary school and high school from 1925-1957 before converting into apartments overlooking First Avenue South which remain today! An ice cream parlor called The Dairy Queen opened on Main Street adjacent to what is now Oneonta State University serving students from 1931-1972 before closing down again due to lack demand! A post office reopened at Ossining Village Hall on October 1st 1954 after service had been relocated from Sterling Airport two miles away! It remained open until 1963 when all Westchester county mail moves through Utica airport instead! After years without any services there finally arrived email delivery service via USPS starting December 6th 2003!! annexation of adjoining communities during last decade has resulted in loss(s)of many historical properties not mentioned above... Ossining was first settled in the early 17th century by Dutch immigrants. The area that now makes up Ossining was part of the former Catskill Peninsula, and at the time the land was rich with natural resources. In 1812, a group of Englishmen, led by Major General George Washington and his aide-de-camp Anthony Wayne, explored the area and claimed it for Great Britain. Afterard's claim was accepted by both France and England, but no practical development took place until after America gained independence from Great Britain in 1776. One of the first things American patriots did when they regained control of their country was to develop Ossining as a trading post on Long Island Sound. The town grew rapidly during this time, reaching its peak population in 1850. During World War II, Ossining played an important role as a manufacturing center for munitions production on Long Island. It also served as headquarters for I Corps during Operation Neptune's Spear, which aimed to drive Japanese forces out of North Africa. After the war ended, Ossining experienced rapid growth as people returned to their old ways of life and businesses reopened. However, economic stagnation followed throughout the 1970s and 1980s; this changed with the arrival of new technology companies to town in the 1990s and 2000s. today Ossining is an attractive community with many cultural attractions such as its art galleries and theaters and its wide variety of restaurants
