Newburgh is a small town in Ulster County, New York, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Rochester–Buttonston Micropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in what is now Newburgh was Nicholas D'Angelo, who arrived in 1781 from Rome, Italy. He and his wife Maria built a log cabin on the site that still stands. The village began to form around this structure as people started arriving to trade with the Native Americans and build homes. By 1824, there were nine houses in the village and it had a population of 350 residents. A post office was established at Newburgh in 1825, and by 1830 there were twelve mailboxes in the village. In 1836, John Hutton opened a general store in Newburgh which became one of the most important businesses in town for many years. In 1849-1850, Reverend Ezra Richardson helped found First Presbyterian Church of Newburgh with his son John Richardson Sr., also an early settler. Reverend Richards served as pastor until his death in 1860; during his tenure he built several additions to the church including a belfry and choir building. In 1865-1866, James Jordon erected a sawmill on Hat Creek just east of present day Main Street; this mill continued operation until 1916 when it was replaced by an electric power plant across Main Street from where it currently stands (now home to Heritage Hall). During prohibition days (1912-1914), alcohol was sold only through Newark's two stores located next door to each other - one anchored by Mr. & Mrs.(Harry) Jennings - which did much business for both towns during those times without either local liquor sales per se being outlawed or taxed however all such operations were shuttered when prohibition ended four months later on December 15th 1914 following nationwide implementation of national Prohibition statutes by President Woodrow Wilson with newly passed legislation dealing with enforcement thereof After World War II new construction increased significantly throughout downtown including numerous apartment buildings along Third Avenue between Fourth and Fifth Streets as well as northward along Eighth Street westward into what are now residential areas adjacent thereto including Buffalo Road (later Boulevard) running concurrently through these areas immediately southwesterly into Clarksonville thence northeasterly onto what are now Lake Shore Drive extending northerly thereto.. This development created major problems for transportation conditions within downtown due primarily to increased volumes of traffic resulting from rapidly expanding apartment structures built after 1945 along Third Avenue between Fourth and Fifth Streets while Boulevard ran concurrent thru these areas immediately southwesterly into Clarksonville thence northeasterly onto what are now Lake Shore Drive extending northerly thereto creating serious difficulties for vehicular traffic conditions within downtown especially because automobile usage growth increasingly stopped abruptly post 1945 while apartment structures continued rapidly growing leading suddenly to rising vehicular traffic rates making transportation conditions within downtown increasingly dangerous

Newburgh was a small village located in upstate New York, about 25 miles (40 km) from Albany. It is now a ghost town and is only accessible by car or on foot. The first settler in the area was Nicholas D’Angelo, who arrived in 1792. In 1811, John Armstrong removed 100 acres (40 ha) of land to make way for the new village of Newburgh. The population of Newburgh grew slowly until the late 1800s when it exploded with growth due to development around the Erie Canal and its related industries. The Panic of 1837 caused a great deal of economic decline for Newburgh and other villages along the canal corridor. However, despite this setback, many residents decided to stay in the community during the Panic years because they saw opportunity for growth elsewhere. During World War II, many local businesses produced munitions for both America and Great Britain. After the war ended, many families decided to move back into their homes after experiencing rapid gentrification throughout most of upstate New York following industrial consolidation throughout that time period statewide. Today there are only a few remaining buildings from when Newburgh was such an active community with over 1,000 residents living in just 10 blocks square including Main Street which still features several shops and two churches dating back to 1860; as well as privately owned homes dating back to before 1830 which offer unique insights into early American life within its narrow boundaries. Many residents have passed away since extensive demolition of much older housing began shortly after national re-entry following 9/11/2001; however portions remain open for public tours on weekends year-round by arrangement with HistoricNewburgh LLC - makers of "Olde Towne Tours" which provide interpretive historic Walking &driving experiences around some key sites within Olde Towne Village including former residences where some pre-9/11 occupants lived together prior to earliest prohibitions against such activities emanating from newly created Yankee notions about high quality civic values (i.e., conformity).
