In 1863, a mill was built inMassena and it operated until 1927. A woolen textile factory began operations in1925 and it continued operating until 1996. After World War II, massENA became an agricultural community with production of crops such as corn, soybeans, wheat, peas and beans accounting for most of its economic activity over the years- However since 2000 many small businesses have opened up including several restaurants which have been successful due to their unique atmosphere or their location within walking distance of local shopping malls or other cultural attractions

The building was called the Academy and it served as a primary and secondary school until 1925. In that year, the town fathers decided to build an all-girls school in honor of their Ladies of the Lake community. The new school was named Dame Edna Haggerty School after Mrs. Haggerty, who donated her land for the project. The first graduating class from Dame Edna Haggerty School was in 1922.
