The Fulton community has a rich military history dating back to the Revolutionary War. One of the most important events in this history was the Battle of Saratoga, which took place on July 16, 1777. The battle was fought between American and British forces and resulted in a decisive victory for the Americans. Fulton is a town in Fulton County, New York, United States. The population was 9,517 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Syracuse metropolitan area. The first settler in what is now Fulton was Nicholas de Courcel who arrived in 1686 and built a cabin on the southern bank of the Onondaga River. He also fished and hunted in what is now central New York. After years of growth and development, the town's first store opened its doors on Main Street in 1816. Fulton thrived as an agricultural center due to its fertile land and waterways that supplied crops to surrounding settlements such as Oneonta, Oswego, Auburn, Lockport and Schenectady. In addition to its agriculture roots, Fulton also played an important role during the early days of transportation by boat through its convenient waterways. In 1819, two brothers named John Purdy founded an inn on Front Street which became known as the Purdy House Inn & Tavern. In 1830, another brother named Jens Oleson opened a store on High Street which became known as The Old Fort Store later shortened to simply "The Fort." In 1834-35 Lieutnant Colonel George Washington Keyes donated 3 acres (1 km²) of land along present day Route 9 south of what is now downtown Fulton for use as a military post; this location would become known as Keyes Heights after General Motors Corporation moved their headquarters from Detroit MI to Flint MI in 1949). This location served as one of several small villages within modern day New York City until it was destroyed by fire in 1902 which caused extensive damage to structures including many churches located thereabouts; these churches were rebuilt overlooking downtown Fulton and are still standing today (see photo below). With increasing commercial activity around him and his new found community infrastructure being put into place, Mayor Ebenezer Sibley convened a meeting on May 2nd 1837 with business leaders from points north including Albany NY & Buffalo NY to discuss creating a new county seat for those parts west of Niagara Falls called Onondaga CountyNY; this idea gained momentum among suffragettes who felt that their voice should be heard above those east of Niagara Falls where Buffalo NY was their regional capital. After much back and forth discussion between members of both communities over several months,, it was decided unanimously that Onondaga CountyNY would be our new home! From this point forward rapid growth followed with businesses opening up all around town Plaza Hotel becoming wellknown for hosting large parties while other establishments grew increasingly upscale such as The Excelsior Hotel which replaced The Purdy House Inn & Tavern after it burned down accidentally just three years after it opened! By 1840 local officials had secured donations enough money had been raised to build what has come to be known locally as "The First Congregational Church" - once again demonstrating how powerful businessmen could make things happen when they wanted them too! A few years later Commodore Cornelius Vanderbilt offered 10 acres (4 hectares) adjacent to Fishers Creek – now renamed Lake Ontario – for developing into a township; despite initial reluctance from some residents because they feared losing access To All That Is Good fishing spots available upstream throughladen with trout throughout most year round!, ultimately consenting following pressure from local merchants!. After much debate over whether or not housing should be allowed within the limits set forth by Commodore Vanderbilt himself given his deep pockets (it wasn't until 1915 when zoning laws changed so homes could only be built upon 5 acres or less), eventually plans were approved allowing 200 residences within blocks wide along present day Route 9 between Main Street & Market Square - essentially making Fulton one big residential neighborhood today! Along with Rapid Growth came more issues however whencorruption plagued many early Residents leading to physical violence against locals by ambitious businessmen (!), cultural clashes over religious services being conducted at different locations inside/outside public buildings etc.; problems we continue see today albeit somewhat under auspices! Today's vibrant downtown scene can largely be credited with Mayor David Dinkins efforts starting back in the late 1990s aimed at revitalizing the area --- resulting in groundbreaking ceremonies taking place earlier this year celebrating 125 years since The First Congregational Church first convened here!!

Fulton was originally founded by Isaac Frontenac in 1795 as a small trading post on the Susquehanna River. In 1807, Henry Ford established his own small textile mill at Fulton and developed it into the largest textile mill in America. The city grew rapidly during the 19th century, becoming one of the most important industrial cities in America. Growth slowed during World War I, but resumed following the end of the war and through the 1920s. New industries such as automobiles and aluminum were developed in Fulton during this time. During World War II, Fulton became a major port for munitions production. The city experienced heavy damage from both world wars and has since been rebuilt with various new technologies and businesses. Today, Fulton is an important center for economic development and cultural life in eastern New York State.
Fulton was named for Alexander Fulton, a Revolutionary War general and congressman from New York. The village was founded in 1824 by John C. Fulton and his wife, Lucy. At its peak in the 1830s, Fulton had a population of around 1,000 people. However, the village declined after it lost access to water resources following the construction of the Erie Canal in 1825 and Ferry Road in 1827. In 1850, most of Fulton was annexed by the city of New York; however, some residents kept their own homes and businesses until 1889 when all but 3 blocks of what is now downtown Fulton were destroyed by fire.
