The United States Air Force has a rich history in Silver City, New Mexico. The city was founded by American Indians in 1912 and the USAF Base was first established there in 1945. The USAF currently operates two airfields here- one is used for training purposes and the other is used for bomber operations. Military personnel from all over the world have been stationed in Silver City since it was founded. Some of the most famous residents include General James Forrestal, who served as Chief of Staff to President Franklin D. Roosevelt; Colonel Jimmy Dean, who commanded U.S. forces during World War II; and General Dwight D. Eisenhower, who led Allied Forces during the Korean War. Some of the aircraft that have been operated at RAF Fairford were the Lancaster Bomber and Spitfire Mk I/II aircraft. These aircraft were manufactured by British manufacturers Limited and delivered to America under Project Paperclip in 1947-1948. After being displayed at RAF Fairford, these Aircraft were transported to Albuquerque where they were transferred to Roswell Army Airfield for test flights on November 16th 1948 under Operation Swallow which saw four variants of this type fly: Lancaster III (RAF No KG 77), Halifax IBI (No HX 018), Hurricane IHA (No HC 001) and Mosquito MK IV VR2H (No MU 554). All four types flew successfully with no fatalities reported however one Mosquito crashed after takeoff from Albuquerque due to poor weather conditions!
