Los Lunas is a town in Bernalillo County, New Mexico, United States. The population was 1,598 at the 2010 census. Los Lunas is part of the Albuquerque metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in what is now Los Lunas was José Ortiz on July 10, 1848. The name "Lunas" meaning "fireplace" came from Ortiz's discovery of a warm spot near by on July 9th while he and his friends were camping outside of Albuquerque. A few days later he erected a small fire at the spot which became known as the "Lunás Campground." Over time other settlers arrived and built more permanent homes around this fireplaces; however, it remained one of the most popular spots to camp in central New Mexico for many years. In 1893 local citizens saw an opportunity to capitalize on their location by building an oil refinery that would produce gasoline and other products for local residents and businesses. The refinery was originally located on Pecos Road just east of present-day Los Lunas but it soon outgrew its original site so a new one was constructed about two miles west along Interstate 25 (I-25) off Laguna Street in 1929/30. This refinery continued production until 1991 when it closed due to economic reasons. The post office opened in 1912 and served both Los Lunas and nearby Anadarko until 1966 when it merged with Bernalillo County's main Post Office to become part of the Albuquerque metropolitan area service area(). Today there are no active postal services within Los Lunas itself but mail still arrives here by airmail from Albuquerque through US Airways Express Mail Services UPS ground shipping which can take up to four weeks).
