Los Lunas, New Mexico is a small town in the U.S. state of New Mexico. It is located on the Pecos River and has a population of about 350 people as of 2010. The first community in what is now Los Lunas was founded by American settlers in 1854, when they were looking for land to homestead after being driven out of their original home by Native Americans. The community grew rapidly and by 1865 it had a school, post office, and two stores. In 1886, the railroad arrived and changed the landscape significantly; as railroads went from being locals’ only options for transportation to becoming everyday fixtures in society, so too did Las Lunas become an important center for commerce. By 1910, the community had seven churches and thirty-six businesses. Las Lunas experienced some significant heartbreak during its time as a boomtown: In 1915, one family lost all their money in gold mining operations; six years later another family lost everything when their mine failed; but most importantly, during World War II Las Lunas helped contribute many soldiers to serve across America due to its location on both coasts- including those who fought at Pearl Harbor and Iwo Jima. After the war ended las Lunas slowly began to rebound with new development until 2003 when an oil spill destroyed much of downtown La Junta making it difficult for businesses to reopen (although efforts have since been made). Despite these setbacks las Lunas remains an important part of New Mexico history as it continues to be home to many residents who are deeply committed to its culture and economy which helps keep this small town thriving over time.
