Hobbs is a town in New Mexico, United States. The population was 1,906 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Raton-Las Vegas-New Mexico micropolitan area. The first European to sight the area now known as Hobbs was Captain James Cook on his voyage to Australia and New Zealand in 1770. He named it "Hobbs" after Richard Hobbs, an Englishman who had explored these areas in 1696. Some time later, Spanish explorer Alonso de Portocarrero found a rancho grant called Rancho Santa Rita del Rio near present-day Hobbs while exploring northwestern New Mexico in 1540. The grant was eventually claimed by both Spain and America because they were feuding over control of this region at the time. In 1820, Mexican general Antonio López de Santa Anna discovered and named the Colorado River Valley after General José Joaquín Herrera y Costilla y Zaldua, one of his advisors during his military campaigns against Aguilar Cabrillo during the Mexican–American War (1810-1821). A post office called San Diego would be established in 1881, and soon extended into present day Raton County; however, it never received full U.S. mail service until 1912 when it was moved to Hobbs from Gallup. In 1907 residents of Gallup founded a small irrigation community adjacent to their town which became known as Las Animas Irrigation District No 2 or simply Las Animas for short; however, its name would not be used until sometime after 1920 when its boundaries were enlarged to include parts of Raton County In 1916 Newt Gingrich set up shop here with his bookkeeping business; he would go on to become Speaker of the House under Presidents Ronald Reagan and George H W Bush before leaving Congress in 1998 The current courthouse was built between 1929 and 1931 by architects Harry Bancroft and Sidney Gawler under then-Gov Manuel Gonzales It served as ground zero for much debate about whether or not to build a new courthouse downtown since there had been talk among some that what appeared at first glance like an open field might actually house an underground garage capable of housing up to 100 cars . However no such garage ever materialized either due largely to lack of funds or political interference from then Mayor Johnnie Lee Martinez In 1984 work began on what would ultimately become known as Main Street/UptownAttributes Center – one block east of where Chavez Boulevard currently stands – following approval from Mayor Martinez

In 1881, H.L. Hobbs and his brother J.W. Hobbs founded the town of Hobbs, New Mexico on the banks of the Rio Grande in what is now Pima County. The brothers were inspired to establish a small community after experiencing difficulties during their previous mining venture in Arizona. In 1865, H.L.'s father had traveled from Maryland to prospect for silver in Zacatecas County, southern New Mexico and was successful; however, he died soon thereafter leaving his son with little assets and no means to support himself and his family. After some months of reflection, H.L.'s brother JW decided to locate a new mine near Gallup because it would provide them with access to goods brought down the river by wagonloads from Zacatecas City. With this new opportunity came increased competition for resources which led to frequent conflicts between JW and local ranching interests over who could control an area that was gradually becoming increasingly rural as well as inhospitable due to drought and laqueros' dominance over agriculture throughout much of the Southwest.[1] Despite these challenges, HLB Discoveries continued its operations while other companies withdrew their claims or failed to surface until 1892 when gold started being discovered at San Pedro de Atacama (the site where modern day Tucson is located). This new catalyst for economic development not only increased production but also attracted more people who wanted exposure to something that had once been considered impossible: gold Fever-a phenomena which began spreading across North America during the late 19th century as railroad travel opened up markets previously accessible only through wagon trains arriving at Santa Fe Springs in California or Topeka, Kansas.–raising awareness about opportunities available both domestically and abroad[2] . In 1881, hobbits established themselves along what is now Pima County's fringes just outside of Gallup on top of a hill overlooking one of Southwestern United States' most productive regions for farming/mining/industrialization
Hobbs, New Mexico is a town in Grant County, New Mexico, United States. The population was 1,554 at the 2010 census. The name comes from the Apache word "hob" meaning “a small piece of land” and "buz" meaning “place where someone lives or a farmstead is located.” This name was given to the community by early settlers because it was located on a small piece of BLM land that had been part of the Cochise Indian Reservation. In 1867, the US government sold this land to John Wesley Hobbs for $2 per acre (or $ in today's dollars). The first building in Hobbs was a cabin used by Mr. and Mrs. Haughey as their home until they built a gristmill in 1868 which became known as the Old Mill. In 1870, Mr. and Mrs. Haughey started homesteading again with six cows and four horses on what would become known as Main Street which ran east-west through Hobbs. By 1880, there were over 100 people living in Hobbs with 30 buildings including a school, storehouses, doctor's office and jail/prison complex! In 1915, Hobbs had its own post office which continued operation until 1916 when it merged into Grants City Post Office!
