The Gallup Army post office was established in 1892. It remained in operation until 1959, when it closed its doors for good. The post office was located at the intersection of US-101 and US-8 east of Gallup. The Postmaster General's Department operated the post office from 1892 to 1959. In 1944, a gift from the United States to Mexico brought about a change in postal service in that country. That year, Mexican President Manuel López Obrador issued Decree No. 5 which ordered all public posts within Mexico to become army posts effective 1 July 1944. This order caused the closure of the civilian POST offices within Mexico City as well as those serving other major Mexican cities; these were replaced by military installations run by the army with their own postal services.
