The town was founded by José María Escobar and his wife, Doña Ana Baca, who arrived on a Mexican cattle drive. TheEscobar family had many military connections through their father, Don José Mariano Escobar y Costilla. In 1869, Don José Mariano Escobar organized and led an attack against the Mexican army at Cerro Gordo. This event is considered to be the beginning of theescalada wars between Mexico and United States. As American forces grew more numerous in Mexico, so too did their desire for weapons and equipment from America. In 1875, General Antonio Meade acquired land east of Deming for a military airfield known as Camp Bowie Air Force Base. The airfield would become one of the most important points of defense for southwest New Mexico during World War II. It was also Home Field for the Albuquerque AIR National Guard Unit until 1969 when it relocated to Roswell Army Air Field Airport northeast of Deming. During World War II,Deming became an important manufacturing center for munitions due to its location in what was then known as "the Arsenal Valley." Many major munitions factories were built here including Bethlehem Steel Company (now Lockheed Martin), Alcoa aluminum smelters and Kaiser Aluminum Corporation (now Alcoa). These companies produced thousands of tons of munitions each month during World War II. Another major industry that flourished in Deming during World War II was aviation production; aircraft manufacturers such as Boeing and Lockheed Martin were among the largest employers in town after Pearl Harbor. Aircraft production increased even beyond 1945 whendeming became home to two new airports: Albuquerque International Airport south of town and Roswell Army Air Field Airport northeast of town which would become home to both USAAF fighter-bombers operated by Dowding AFB (later Wright-Patterson AFB) until 1971 afterdeming's incorporation into New Mexico statehood!
