In 1849, Major John Myrick established Hidalgo County's first courthouse and jail near present-day Carlsadore when he organized San Miguel County from parts of Baja California and Sonora. The new county quickly grew into one ofNew Mexicans most significant regions due to its strategic position at the head of key trade routes connecting Santa Fe with California and Central America. During much of his tenure as governor (1875-87), Don Carlos Ortiz led an aggressive campaign against white trader Manuel García Padilla who had taken control of large sections of southern New Mexico Territory following Mexican independence from Spain in 1821. Ortiz' successful effort endedPadilla's power over much of centralNewMexico Territory for over two decades until local forces finally drove him out in 1886. In addition to their strategic location, other factors contributed toCarolsbad's rapid growth during this time period including excellent access to water resources and ample farmland beyond the city limits which made it possible for farmers to grow crops year round insteadof relying solely on winter rains.
