The United States Air Force has a long and rich history of giving gifts to individuals and organizations. This history begins with the inception of the USAF in 1947. The USAF was created as a result of the Cold War between the United States and the Soviet Union. In order to provide air support for American forces, it was necessary to have an organization that could give back. Accordingly, on November 15th, 1947, General Douglas MacArthur gave the first gift to the USAF when he presented a check for $10 million to be used within two years in purchasing new aircraft and equipment. The donation marked an important milestone in USAF history because it helped establish a basis for future donations. In 1969, General Curtis LeMay made another important donation when he gifted 2 McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom jets to serve as replacement aircraft for old World War II planes that had been lost or mothballed. These donations demonstrated how much America valued its air force and its service members. Additionally, in 1984 Major General Don Hruby donated his own Boeing 727 jet Airliner which served as both transportation and research Aircraft program director at Edwards AFB during my time as Director of Research & Development at Edwards AFB from 1985-1991). Since then, numerous other individuals and organizations have given Gifts totaling over $100 million dollars to help improve aeronautics capabilities within our country’s military forces! The Carlsbad Air Force Base was originally established in 1942 as part of the United States Army Air Forces. The base was redesignated as the United States Air Force Base at Carlsbad on 9 November 1948. It became operational as a military airfield on 1 October 1949, and was initially used for bombardment and bombing missions against targets in Japan. The first jet bomber squadron operated from Carlsbad AFB on 20 September 1952. In 1969, the US Navy assumed control of the base from the USAF, and it became an anchor for naval aviation operations in Southern California. In 1990, the United States Warthog Squadron departed to be replaced by a NATO-registered Dutch Rafale fighter squadron. On 1 July 1992, when McGuire Air Force Base closed its doors after more than 50 years of service, Carlsbad AFB became fully manned by the USAF with Boeing 727s replacing Douglas DC-8s and McDonnell Douglas MD-80s. On 15 February 1994, declared surplus military aircraft were withdrawn from use at Carlsbad AFB and they were placed into storage until they can be auctioned off or destroyed under most circumstances except while being used for static displays or during official functions such as flag raising ceremonies. The present day Atomics Aeronautical Laboratories building opened in 1998 at what had been Military Headquarters Building #2 (MHBU). MHBU housed both Headquarters 10th AF (Air Combat Command) which served as an Operations Center for all UAF Tactical Aerospace forces flying worldwide whilst also maintaining their individual squadrons' warfighting spacecraft; Control Tower/Control Line Units (CTU), Aircraft Maintenance Units (AMU's), Weapons Systems Maintenance Units (WSMUs),weapon system commander officer facility; Engineering Support Facilities; Test Pilot Facility; Human Resources Administration Building; Utility Buildings including Barracks & Hangars & Storage Buildings . On 6 December 2003 UAF activated its El Centro Sector gateway allowing remote access to Vandenberg AFB through CVN 21 using AIM-9M Sidewinder missiles fired from USS Enterprise(CVN 78) . This action markedueling flight opportunities available to other DoD agencies operating out of CVN 21 resulting in increased numbers of Aurora flights over our area

The USAF gift history can be traced back to World War II when America entered into affiliation with Great Britain as part of the Anglo-American Axis coalition against Nazi Germany. Upon Japan's surrender in 1945, Great Britain ceded control of all non-German airspace to the United States which renamed it the American Southwest Air Forces or "USAF." At this time RAF squadrons were transferred from Britain to USAAF units under operational command and assignment to theater commands throughout North America. In 1941, the USAF created the National Defense Service Medal and the Air Force Commendation Medal as part of the post-World War II reorganization of the armed forces. These medals were established as national awards for heroism or achievement in support of military operations by members of the USAF or its predecessors.
