On October 12 of that year, residents founded the territorial government of Cochabamba which lasted until 1915 when it was replaced by a federal one under president Porfirio Díaz. Apostle Pedro Gómez Sánchez arrived in 1865 to form the first Catholic church in what would become Artesianas and started construction on what would become known as la Casa Nuestra (Our House). He also built a school which opened on November 25th of that year. This building still stands and is used as a museum today. On December 11th 1862 Father Antonio Menéndez dedicated la Iglesia de los Niños Cristianos (Church of Our Children) which served as our parish church until 1966 when it became romanesque due to pressure from local churches within the same diocese asking for similar changes because they felt their buildings were too alike! In 1937, artesianos successfully petitioned Governor Anastasio Valdez to allow them to establish a city outside of Albuquerque due to the increasing population density within Albuquerque's limits and lack of available land for development east of Broadway Street (now Candelaria Boulevard).
