The Alamogordo National Guard was organized on December 15, 1912. It was the first time that a national guard was organized in New Mexico. The purpose of the unit was to provide law and order during times of insurrection or chaos. In 1915, the NM National Guard became an infantry arm when it was activated as part of World War I. After the war, the National Guard played a critical role in suppressing violence in New Mexico until 1960. From 1916-1960, over 4,000 soldiers from across the United States served with the NM National Guard. The NM National Guard's history begins with its activation as part of World War I on December 15th, 1912. At that time there were no military branches within New Mexico and so volunteers from all over were called into service for two weeks of training at Camp Bowie near Alamogordo under command of Brigadier General John Harker Sr.. The unit consisted of nineteen officers and seventy-six enlisted men who trained primarily in artillery but did some fighting as well including skirmishes against Apache Indians. On November 11th 1913 they marched into Albuquerque to begin their deployment which lasted until October 1914 when they returned home due to lack of funds. After World War I ended, many soldiers returned home to their civilian lives but others decided to serve in defense industries during the Great Depression era (1929-1939). As a result, most members of theNMNationalGuardwere discharged after thirty days without pay following their enlistment date. However, Retired Colonel James Fenton converted three companies (the 1st battalion; 2nd battalion; 3rd battalion) into an Army Reserve unit known as 9th Infantry Regiment Republican Guards on September 17th 1941 due to increasing demands for militia services by state governors throughout Arizona and New Mexico statewide. These Companies initially formed μgrouped with other volunteer Militia units from six southern states who had been mobilized for World War II prior to mobilization centers opening up nationally on April 6th 1942 . On November 10th 1941 five companies from Alamogordo organized themselves into Company C which became Headquarters Company for 9/17/41 Regimental Commander Captains Willard Ewing and Harry Garland commanding officer Captured Japanese POWs George Matsushima(a Japanese American), Tomohiro Shimazaki(a Japanese American), Kenichi Kamiya(a Japanese American)and Shigeru Uehara(an American). This company also raised money by selling jello and candy bars door-to-door while stationed at Fort Bliss along side other local businesses voluntary militiasmen such as Pecos Valley VolunteerRiflesmen #1 Cowboy Bill Youngblood aka King Snake Joe Brown led by Captain Cliff Storr commander post WWII veteran rancher Clifton Waddell Jr...In early 1945 Captain Garland transferred his company HQ back east Okla where he had been Commanding Officer previously with 5TH Arty Battalion Oklahoma National Guardsmen...This is how 9/17/41 came about being activated next day becoming Headquarters & Control Company for Ralph Jinks Battalion @ Fort Bliss Texas A&M University Graduated Officers: First Lieutenant Colonel James Fenton Second Lieutenant Robert Dolan Third Lieutenant William Gorman Fourth Lieutenant Cyril Ritchie Fifth lieutenant Irving Bourgeois

In 1917, there were three battalions and a regiment. In 1921, the Guard had six battalions and a regiment. In 1932, the Guard had eight Battalions and a Regiment. In 1941, the Guards totaled twelve Battalions and a Regiment. The present-day Alamogordo National Guard consists of over one hundred fifty soldiers with an active duty population of almost five thousand individuals.
Alamogordo is a small town in New Mexico, United States. It is located on the Mescalero Apache Reservation. The population was 1,428 at the 2010 census. Alamogordo is part of the Gallup-Lima-Albuquerque Metropolitan Statistical Area. Alamogordo was founded by Pascual de Arcos and his family in 1795 as an agricultural settlement near present-day Albuquerque. The town served as a military post during the Spanish–American War and later became a center for cattle ranching and mining operations on the Mescalero Apache Reservation. Alamogordo's growth continued into the 20th century, with industries such as automobiles, appliances, steel production, telecommunications and other businesses developing there. In recent years, Alamogordo has become known for its annual Fiesta de las Luces celebration which features outdoor concerts and art exhibitions throughout downtown areas of the town during late November or early December
The National Guard has been a part of the United States for over two centuries. There is evidence that the National Guard was formed in 1790 as a militia to protect American citizens from Indian attacks. The first national guard unit was organized on November 8, 1792, and consisted of 10 men under the command of Colonel George Washington. The first national guard regiment was raised on December 3, 1793 and numbered 100 men. In 1802, the Militia Act gave the National Guard an effective military force and its name changed to Army of the United States. On July 4, 1861, President Abraham Lincoln called for all states to form militias to help protect against Confederate forces invading America. On September 26th, 1861, three days after Confederate General Robert Eaton's raid on Fort Sumter in South Carolina ended Ulysses S Grant's attempt at ending Reconstruction in America by freeing all slaves in America north of Mason Dixon Line- this action led to secession by nine southern states (Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Louisiana,- these were later re-joined into the Union). On October 15th 1862 Congress passed an act authorizing general mobilization for a total of 24 months which would result in 966 regiments and 7800 officers and men being mobilized across 46 states as part of The Second Civil War (1861-1865). By 1865 there were more than 12 million troops serving with various branches army or navy throughout the Union- this number only increased following World War II when many countries converted their militaries into civilian armies. In 1924 Congress authorized state militias within each state if it chose not to have a federally chartered Federal militia so each state had 200 soldiers plus 10 policemen per 1k population while federal law allowed 2 infantry battalions with up to 12 soldier per battalion per county while also allowing 5 artillery batteries with up to 400 rounds/minute fire while also providing $5 million/year for military assistance program(this program was terminated during WW2). Each state received $10 million/year until 1938 when funds were stopped because there was no need for such an large amount given recent technological advancements like radar and jet planes which could now shoot down aircraft without them exploding! As technology improved so did our understanding of war which could then be used offensively or defensively depending on what we felt like our country needed at that time! Since 1978 there has been no formal authorization process for governors to call out National Guard units should they feel like something needs done- currently it falls under provincial jurisdiction meaning any governor can call out a unit without prior notification! This means that should something happen such as natural disasters or riots certain units might get called in whereas others might not! Overall this shows how much support exists behind activeduty troops within our society both past and present!

On September 25, 1861, the 1st Rhode Island Regiment (New England) was mustered into military service and served in the Union army during the American Civil War. In 1865, the unit was redesignated as the 2nd Rhode Island Regiment and served in Reconstruction following the war. Afterward, it became an infantry regiment of the National Guard and continued serving through most of the 20th century. The regiment was disbanded on May 8, 1992.
