The Marine Museum in South Plainfield, New Jersey, has a rich history of marine gifts. The museum was founded in 1892 by Captain George W. Atwater and his wife, Sarah. The Atwaters were avid collectors of naval artifacts and enjoyed giving away these items to friends and family. In 1924, the Atwaters donated their collection of maritime memorabilia to the University of Delaware. This donation allowed the University to continue its research into maritime history and create an exhibit on the History of Marine Gifts at the Delaware Maritime Museum in Newark, NJ. Today’s Coast Guard Collection includes 13 boats dating back to 1903 as well as interesting pieces from various wars including World War II and Vietnam. South Plainfield, New Jersey is a town in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 24,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Newark–Trenton metropolitan area. South Plainfield is located on the south side of the Passaic River and owes its name to the plainness of its land. The first Europeans to visit what is now South Plainfield were Dutch traders and soldiers who followed up an expedition led by Captain John Smith in 1609. In 1702, when George Washington was appointed commander-in-chief of the Continental Army's Second Regiment of Foot (later renamed United States Infantry), he was quartered in South Plainfield with his troops for nine months before moving on to West Point. The township was formed from parts of Rahway Township and Elizabeth Township on March 14, 1838, following a vote by the voters of those townships to form a new township. At that time, Rahway Township had a population of 10,711 while Elizabeth Township had a population of 15,927. South Plainfield, New Jersey is a town in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 12,521 at the 2010 census. South Plainfield is part of the Egg Harbor Township and is bordered by Warren Township to the north, Monmouth County to the east, and Plainsboro Township to the south. The first settlers of what would become South Plainfield were Dutch families who arrived in 1664. They named their community "Fruit Neck". In 1814, Pennsylvania became a United States state and South Plainfield became part of Hunterdon County. On July 1, 1827, South Plainfield was incorporated as a borough by an act of the State Legislature; it was one of three municipalities in Hunterdon County that were not annexed to Philadelphia during the American Civil War. In 1881–1882 two new localities were formed within Hunterdon County: Easton and West Egg Harbor Township (later known as Warren Township). These two townships added villages – West Egg Harbor had a post office from 1881 until 1915 while Easton did not have one until 1916 – but their boundaries remain largely unchanged to this day. On October 14th, 1886 South Plainfield replaced its original name with Uniontown because that is how allusions appeared on certificates issued at that time bearing that name. The town's first mayor was John Witherspoon Sr., who served from 1886-1892 under various names including "John Atherton" and "John Boice". Uniontown's incorporation came about because there existed no village located in present-day Uniontown which could provide services such as schools or fire protection for its citizens; nor could it generate enough taxes to support itself without being municipally owned and operated like other villages in Scanlon Valley . The township also decided that Uniontown should be called something different than Fruit Neck so as not to confuse future generations about where they actually lived when they grew old enough to remember their childhood home’s name(s)
