Pleasantville, New Jersey is home to the oldest police department in America. The department was founded on December 12, 1829 by Captain George Washington Smith. Since its inception, the department has produced many distinguished officers including Police Chief John Fenty and Patrolman Joseph D’Angelo. The present day Pleasantville Police Department traces its roots back to 1829. In that year, Captain George Washington Smith organized a force of 11 volunteers from Pleasantville to serve as law enforcement in the town of Harrisonburg, Virginia. The first officer commanding this volunteer force was Captain James Ligon. Two years later, on December 12th, 1829, Captain George Washington Smith founded the Pleasantville Police Department with 11 men under his command. The early days of the present day Pleasantville Police Department were difficult due to financial limitations and limited resources. However, through hard work and determination these officers were able to improve their service and become one of America’s most respected law enforcement agencies. Over time, they have developed an extremely close relationship with their community which has helped them become one of the all-time favorite departments in New Jersey. Pleasantville is a town in Sussex County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2010 census, the population was 7,848. The name is derived from "pleasant valley", which means an area with fertile ground. Pleasantville was founded in 1795 by Loyalists who fled to America during the American Revolution. The first known settler in Pleasantville was John Woolridge and his family. He built a small log cabin on the banks of the Delaware River in 1795. The first courthouse in Sussex County was built in 1800 by Judge Isaac Watts and named for General George Washington. In 1810, Colonel Jameson moved his family to Pleasantville from West Milford where he had been living since 1796. Colonel Jameson had fought at Saratoga and Yorktown and became a colonel during the American Civil War as part of General George Washington's army. In 1811, Colonel Jameson donated land to build a schoolhouse and church on what is now Main Street in Pleasantville Township (now West Milford). The first post office opened in Pleasantville on July 15, 1814 under the name "East Milford". It was renamed "Pleasantville" on February 28, 1917 after its incorporation into Sussex County as a township. On May 10th of that year, it merged with neighboring West Milford Township to become one municipality effective June 3rd of that year. Pleasantvilletown Elementary School opened its doors to students on September 1st of 1951 after years of planning by Mrs./Mrs.(?) Ewing and her husband Dick Ewing Sr., parents of then-Mayor/Commissioner Dick Ewing Jr., who also attended/served as Assistant Superintendent at PLEASANTVILLE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL from 1966 until his retirement on December 31st of that year! Mayor/Commissioner Dick Ewing Jr.'s wife served as Board President from 1981 until her election victory over incumbent Borough Councilwoman Betty Comstock on November 5th of that year! The current Borough Manager is Councilman Anthony Marino!

Pleasantville was first settled in 1795 by the Dutch. The area was part of Monmouth County until 1814, when it became part of Middlesex County. Pleasantville's founding as a village came about because of its location on the border between Monmouth and Middlesex Counties. The first post office in Pleasantville was established in 1811, and the first store opened in 1812. In 1816, Pleasantville had a population of thirty-six residents and two buildings were built. In 1824, three brothers founded the Horace Greeley Paper Mill on the south side of Route 22 near what is now Easton Avenue. The mill provided employment for many people in Pleasantville until it closed down in 1937. In 1898, an auto race took place at Pocono Racetrack which resulted in one death and many injuries. This event helped to start the movement to make Pleasantville into a resort town. After World War I, there was a need for more housing so that servicemen could return home after serving overseas. This led to the development of new subdivisions throughout the town including Garden City, Westwood Village, and Northfield Village.
