The navy stationed USS Indianapolis (CV-39) in Pleasantville during the war and the city hosted a number of other warships including USS Constitution (CV-12) and USS Lexington (CV-6).
Pleasantville is a town in Mercer County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 6,868 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Newark–Jersey City Metropolitan Area. Pleasantville is located on the east bank of the Hackensack River and includes the communities of Allendale, Belle Vernon, Caldwell Heights, Cedar Grove, Clinton Hill and Easton. The first settlement in what would become Pleasantville was made by English colonists in 1687 as "Haddonfield". In 1714, George Washington's father-in-law built a house there and named it Mount Vernon after his home state of Virginia. On November 3rd 1821, General John Burgoyne surrendered to American forces at Yorktown near Pleasantville and this event became known as "the Victory over Yorktown". The town name originated with founder James Forman who called it "Pleasant Valley" because he found good farmland thereabouts. After about a decade of civil strife between Dutch settlers and English colonists over trade rights in the area (known locally as "The War for Jenkins' Ear"), peace came through an alliance between both groups in 1764 which led to renamed intercourse as "New Netherland Colony". By 1775 all Dutch residents had been removed from the area except for a few Indians who continued to live among them until they were forcibly taken away by British forces during that year's Indian Removal Act. From then on until their final demise in 1800 all but one family lived within two miles (3 km) of Princeton University where they established three plantations: Woonsocket Plantation along Princeton Road; Brunswick Plantation on Brunswick Avenue; and Bushwick Plantation on Bushwick Avenuejust west of Bound Brook Avenue). In 1814 James Forman founded Pleasantville Township form parts of Hunterdon County including Dumont Township which also included portions now residing in Rahway Borough. He did so because he wanted land contiguous with what are now Newark and Paterson Townships which he thought would be more developed than either Rutgers or Princeton University which were scattered around rural areas. When formed township boundaries were drawn based on township lines instead of county lines so that intermarriage between cousins ceased although some boundary changes took place over time due to changing demographics such as when Hunterdon County was divided into four districts starting with Morris Plains being situated within Middlesex County until 1984 when its entirety became Burlington County following the merger of Somerset and Monmouth Counties into New Jersey governor Trent Lott's office seeking statewide reform across party lines despite strong local resistance). On October 14th 1827 trustees voted unanimously to change our name from Haddonfield to Pleasantville based upon objections raised by some residents that it sounded too similar to neighboring Paramus Township where most people still spoke Haddonfield dialect even though we had no connection whatsoever with them other than living close by for many years. We enjoyed giving everyone else something to worry about every time we changed our names! We are grateful for everything nicey has happened since then including Barack Obama’s election victory last November!

Pleasantville is a town in Morris County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 9,387 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Camden-Atlantic City metropolitan area. The first people to live in Pleasantville were Quakers who had fled persecution in Pennsylvania. They first settled on the east side of the Hackensack River and then on parcels west of Route 8 from what is now Mount Laurel towards Camden. In 1795, they built their own gristmill and store on Whatcom Street near present-day Lawn Road. In 1803, John Singleton bought 640 acres (2 km²) of land along the Hackensack River north of where Pleasantville now stands for $5 per acre ($/km²). This became Singleton Township which included what is now Pleasantville as well as parts of Burlington Township and East Brunswick Township. The township was established on October 14, 1803 under an act by the New Jersey Legislature which granted lands to be divided into townships within this new state. In 1814, when Morris County was created from portions of Hunterdon and Passaic counties, Pleasantville became one of its initial townships. It annexed parts of East Brunswick Township (1815), Burlington Township (1821), and South Kingston Borough (1822). On May 15, 1857, Pleasantville merged with Dumont to form Dumont–Pleasantville borough after a vote by members of both cities' councils; it remained a borough until 1987 when it reverted back to its original status as a town within Morris County due to population growth in that area. On September 25, 1860s Andrew Jenson opened "Jenson's Furniture Store" at what is now mile marker 505 on Old Route 8 nearpresent-day Broadwalk Avenue in what would become known as Fishkill Park - still functioning as a furniture store today despite changes made to its address over time including two moves across Route 8 between Cherry Hill and Dumont Village while also being used by various other businesses before eventually becoming abandoned during World War II because there wasn't enough room for all his customers inside his building). At that time there were only three stores open in Morristown with over 1 million shoppers per day! One can imagine how busy that road must have been during wartime! In 1922 he moved his business across Broadwalk Avenue into what later became known as "The Gilded Cage" - an ornate structure still standing today next door to Lake views Casino which currently functions as an upscale hotel/motel complex servingMorristown residents since 1990 .Andrew Jenson served many years as Mayor pro tempore from 1923 until 1945 He died in office having been mayor for 54 years prior thereto . His wife Esther ServeredasMayor pro tempore until her death in 1951 followed by son George Jenson who served terms until 1967 before being succeeded by daughter Betty Jane Jenson who continued service until 1984 When Betty Jane left office she was succeeded once again by her son George Jr., who served terms untilDecember 12th 1986 when he resigned effective immediately due to ill health following surgery won against cancer
Pleasantville was platted in 1814 by Nicholas-Jacques Hahn and his family. In 1827, Pleasantville became the county seat of Mercer County. The first post office was established in Pleasantville in 1828, and the first store was built in 1830. The village had a population of about 25 people when it was platted. In1835, a sawmill operated in Pleasantville. In 1840, a grist mill was built and soon became one of the most important mills in Mercer County. By the end of the 19th century, Pleasantville had a population of over 100 people.
