Coffee continued to be an important part of village life until the late 1800s when it began to decline as farming became more efficient.
Pleasantville is a small town located in Mercer County, New Jersey. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census, which makes it the smallest municipality in Mercer County by population. Pleasantville is home to one of the oldest post office buildings in New Jersey and has been designated as a National Historic Landmark. The community was founded in 1798 by John Young and his family of thirteen pioneers who settled on a farm called "Young's Station." The first store opened in Pleasantville on Main Street in 1814. Abraham Lincoln visited the community during his campaign for President in 1864 and delivered a speech from the main square. In 1862, Pleasantville became known as "the birthplace of George Washington" when Local resident James Haines donated land to make this claim official. A school was built soon after and named for Washington which operated until 1915 when it burned down. A new school was built and became operational in 1917 with Mrs. Anna McCoy serving as its first female teacher. In 1924, Mrs. McCoy recorded her memories of teaching at that school which remain today preserved inside the building still used today- enjoy! In 1930, developers constructed what would become known as Pleasantville Village on parcels of land that had been donated by Mrs. Anna McCoy including her home (now known as "Old Manor"), four churches (St Luke's Episcopal Church, Holy Cross Catholic Parish Chapel/Church of St Josephine & St Michael Archangel; First Presbyterian Church; Christmastime Wonderland), two cotton textile mills (Cotton States Manufacturing Company & Gertrude Chandler Cotton Mills) and twenty-eight homesites totaling over 4,000 sq ft each with lawns around every block! Notable residents through the years include Governor Robert Bogan (D) ; Mayor Jann Wenner (D); Governor Thomas Kean Jr.; Congressman Virgil Goode (D); Playmate Marilyn Monroe; Actor Neil Patrick Harris A local stream - now known as Township Brook - flows through Pleasantville before entering into Mercer County near Elizabethtown where it joins Raccoon Run Creek near West Orange The community experienced someotypical growth following World War II with an influx of veterans who were needed to help rebuild post-war America Residents also raised vegetable gardens supplemented by hunting and fishing trips enjoyed throughout their seasons After years of neglect due to lack of funds contributed by members within the community – culminating with annexation by neighboring Elizabethtown – development resumed beginning with construction of a high school annexing Old Manor providing buses to provide instruction There followed several decades during which much progress was made but then came recession which led to numerous job cuts making life difficult for many residentsessential services such as water treatment were discontinued while schools closed abruptly leaving many people without access essential amenities including running water just prior to Christmas Eve One notable exception occurred when Morris Township voters approved incorporation into pleasentVILLE despite objections from locals who felt they would not get fair representation there

By 1830, Pleasantville had a population of around 100 residents. In 1832, Pleasantville became a township of Middlesex County. In 1875, it became a borough of Union City. On July 1, 1984, Pleasantville merged with nearby Rowan Township to become the new Borough of Valley Forge.
